So the next time someone moans to me about having to travel an hour or two to a competition, get ready to be lambasted!

You lied!

Monday Bench

Feeling wrecked and sleep deprived, shouldn't be training tonight - and wouldn't have been if no one turned up - but Scott and Frank did, so I may as well do a few light reps to keep ticking over if I'm there anyway...

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 2
150 for 1 - wow!
160 for 1 - phuck me!!
150 for 2 - as above
140 for 3
130 for 4
120 for 5.

Well, if that had been someone else I would have been impressed, so I guess I impressed myself tonight. Still shattered, can't believe I actually did what I did, but I have witnesses . Maybe I should miss a night's sleep, drive 450 miles and do as three hour ferry journey more often!

Thursday Bench

Before tonight's numbers, I want to set out my goals for the next 2 1/2 months. I plan to compete in the Scottish Bench on 13th April, and there is a chance that I'll be competing in the World Masters Bench 5 days later. I find that setting out my goals motivates me to achieve them. All my training between now and then will be equipped-focused. I'll train in a shirt once a week, and with bands once a week

Targets

140 plus thick blue band
150 plus red band
160 plus thin blue band
210 to a 2 inch board equipped
155 for 3 raw

Let's look back in early April and see how close I got to hitting targets...

Tonight's Training

Just me and Scott tonight, braving the cold and damp. The bar was so cold we didn't even do 20 with the bar first set, but made do with 10. I'm still fatigued from last weekend, so my training this week is 'tickover', the real work starts next Monday

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
115 for 3
135 for 2
145 for 1
155 for 1
165 - fail - just too heavy
155 for 2 - really happy with that
145 for 3
135 for 4
125 for 8
Finish.

Got to be happy with that despite failing the 165. Roll on Monday and the start of build up.

Monday Bench

Good turn out tonight, five of us and a pb-fest! I've modified my plans slightly - it'll be session 1, thin blue band; session 2, red band; session 3 thick blue band, session 4, shirt. Tired and slightly nauseous on the way home (5 hours sleep last night probably didn't help) but performed well in the circumstances.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4

Thin blue band on and

100 for 3
120 for 2
130 for 1
140 for 1
150 for 1
152.5 for 1 (equals pb)
135 for 3
135 for 3
135 for 3

Band off

120 for 8
Finish.

Would have done more than 8 with 120 but the nerve pain in the right arm kicked in on rep 6. Reckon there was 10 or 11 there otherwise.

Good session all round tonight. Scott got his 5x5 with 125, Donnie did a 1RM pb and finished with an easy 12 with his 1RM back on day one, only a few weeks ago, and Frank continued the climb off his plateau with a new 1RM pb and great volume as well. Good to welcome Heather back - she'll be the best female bencher in Scotland this time next year. Good vibe in the Garage of Power.

Thursday Bench

6 of us tonight, good training vibe again, plenty of banter and just the right amount of rest. Red band night for me.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4

Red band on

100 for 3
120 for 2
130 for 1
140 for 1
145 for 1
125 for 3
125 for 3
125 for 3

Band off

100 for 15
Finish.

Happy with that again. Wanted 142.5 top single to be 10 behind the thin blue band, but 140 was so sweet we decided to try 145 and got it - took everything though. Think that at least equals my red band pb, not 100% though. Only 5 Kg off my red band target and two months to go On the triples, they were all good, but I felt that damn nerve pain on the third rep of each set. Learning to block it out better though. Nice to get a bit of volume in with 100. The nerve pain stopped me doing more, I plan to add one rep a session until I hit 20.

Next Monday, thick blue band, next Thursday a shirt session. It's my birthday next Thursday, 200 would be a nice present to myself. We can but try...

For completeness, I coached squats and then took part in deadlifts last night. Legs weak after two months relative inactivity and back groaning away, so I worked up to a single with 150 and left it there.

Monday Bench

Another foul evening, flooded roads predicted at high tide, only three of us tonight, I suspect the others are afraid of getting trapped the wrong side of the Braighe. Bar not so cold though. It's thick blue band night.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3

Thick blue band on

100 for 3
120 for 2
130 for 1 - just
135 for 1 - better than 130, only 2.5 off my pb but that's as far as I go tonight
115 for 3
115 for 3
115 for 3

Band off

100 for 16 - just! That was the target, one more than last time.

Hit all my targets tonight, so all good. i was doing two sets each time the band went on, with some rest between sets obviously. The 130 was after the 120 x 2, the first 115 was after the 135, and the last two 115s followed each other. Not ideal, but practical. Second set was more of a struggle each time. The target with this band is 140 by the end of March, think I'll hit that ok.

Thursday, it's shirt night. Hoping for a 200, but let's see. Might struggled with 100 for 17 though. Realcraigyboy hit a huge bench pb tonight, 10 Kg jump.

Nice work Martin. I don't know what a Braighe is but I am fairly sure I don't want to be trapped on the wrong side of it.

Thanks Peter. The Braighe is a natural causeway linking the peninsula I live on to the rest of the island. The wrong side is the side that's not the side you live on. Happy.

Wednesday Training

On Wednesday I coach squats and then join in for a few deadlifts. Today was a fabulous squats night. Donnie hit another pb - 150 nice and deep and popped up really powerfully, more in the tank. Only his fifth ever squat session, indescribably brilliant. Frank got 100 squat for the first time in only his fourth session, and Heather finally started hitting depth and did her best technique work ever.

On to deadlifts and Donnie pbed there too - a 200 dead in only his fourth session. In fairness it would have passed in a strongman comp but not a powerlifting comp but it was a strong lift and a gym pb for sure - and after squats!

My own deadlifting was rather less impressive

60 for 5 - back really not liking it
80 for 2 - stopped to put a belt on, nearly stopped altogether
80 for 4 - horrible
100 for 3 - better
120 for 2 - better still
140 for 1 - easy
160 for 1 - quite easy
170 - fail, back not strong enough to get it past the knees
170 - fail, psyched myself up, tried again, couldn't budge it
Finish.

The legs are weak after so little work over the last two months, so I'm recruiting the back when I shouldn't be, and the back is just a wee bit iffy at the moment. Didn't fancy any volume. In truth an easyish 160 way exceeded expectations.

It was a lovely night tonight. Only 3 degrees, but hardly any wind and nice and dry, so straight from training to the beach, which of course we had all to ourselves. GymBoy got wiped out by a couple of waves he just didn't see coming, but he kept going back for more! I left for the beach with a very muddy collie, and came back with a very clean, very wet one. Happy

Bench tomorrow, the bar gets loaded to 200. Maybe just to boards, maybe all the way, but definitely 200! Happy
