I found it very effective when I ran smolov many years ago. I only did the first phase, but got a lot stronger with it and improved form.

Upper work I more or less cut out - pressing once a week, alternating between bench and overhead - and didn't lose any strength.

I didn't do any deadlifting during those few weeks, and again didn't lose any strength in that either.

I think it's worth giving a go - after all, it's only a few weeks (of torture).
