You compete in your national comp, and there is two f**king guys in you weight & age class....wahooooo! I'd rather not bother!

Agree. There are about a million record holders in powerlifting. Everyone is a champion.

Got told the other day a young lady competed in a pl comp and got 5 records. 5 records for a sport with 3 lifts in it. Only in powerlifting. Anyway, I digress...

Is it f**k! The recent UKSC qual I competed in
5 reps won axle
8 won squat
pull was for max
5 of 8 finished farmers rapidly
medley was done a bit by some, more by others, and mostly completed by a few
hercules hold...winner got 1min+....last was 30secs+
How the f**k that is get anything like PL is beyond me
If you're only strong enough to do one rep on each event, shuffle the moving events a few metres, you need to get stronger, its as simple as that

who were top 3 at your comp, and roughly what did they weigh?

Tom - 150KG
Gary - 140ish?
Kingham - 140-50

4th and 5th (it was vfery close 1-5) were 130 & 118 respectively

The weight issue as an excuse IMO...get stronger, and you'll be more competitive

In the recent Open comps in Scotland, there have been no "outlandish" weights were you need to be 140+ to do well in them IMO

I'll reiterate what I said about Scotland.....but about England. I saw no weights in the open qualifiers (maybe the 149KG axle is a bit excessive) were you need to be 140KG+ to have a shot at shifting the weights...

I'm all but 100KG, of average 105 standard, and managed most things OK...so someone 120 should have no issues

I appreciate what your saying but what would be 4/5 classes + novices IMO isn't a lot (open 120 105 90 80). There will always be some people who compete in more than one class (which doesn't seem to happen in powerlifting) eg Shane u80/90/105 or Jeremy u90/opens. U105s will do u105/120, u120 will do u120 and opens

But the difference I think between the 2 sports is in powerlifting peoPle consider themselves champ in a weight class and that's it. In strongman someone might be u105 champ but they wouldn't call themselves bsm. They open weight category is still the most respected and overall title and I'm sure everyone in any weight category will respect that

Unless of someone stole your weights and you get in the paper

No, its just renaming of intermediate and opens at Bodypower basically

If thats the case then there is obviously a need for a 120k class then as a couple of the names down for the BP open are top level 105s and shouldnt imo be classed as intermediates , surely intermediate refers to your level of experience in the sport rather than your bodyweight? If top level 105s are feeling the need to compete at inter level comps then theres obviously a gap to be filled.

It is, in what is already, a very small sport numbers wise. I just dont see the need...with my reasons given clearly above and the earlier pages

Bodypower isnt relevant in this thread. Denny classified it as follows:

Heavies - top end os sport guys, Ken, Hixxy, Gardner etc

Opens - open (or 105 guys) just below the top rung

Nothing nto do with BW or experience

I think you could probably learn something from PL, either what to do or what not to do!

Far too many classes:

PL has specific problems which you just don't have in SM, such as Raw/Single/Double/Multi ply leagues. PL has age categories, SM doesn't (AFAIK). PL has multiple federations.

While I don't like the multiple federations/classes/categories any more than the next person I don't think you'll get that issue in SM just with the addition of 1 category. You guys just don't have the split of federations, weight classes, age classes, gear classes that we have.

As such, I don't think making a 120kg class in SM is going to lead towards the type of split we have in PL. So I don't think that's a valid concern.

Shouldn't you be in the Open?:

120kg is a far cry from the weight that the Open blokes are carrying. The argument is that after 105kg a guy should move to the Opens anyway. I agree that they should move up, but the point is 105 to Open is a big jump. A 120kg class would be popular and a nice stepping stone toward Open.

We're getting too casual/too s**t/too weak/the JC argument:

This I can understand. Why lower the standards, rather than just encourage people to get stronger. I support keeping stuff heavy but I don't think the addition of a 120kg class will encourage people to get s**t, rather it'll act as another stepping stone toward Open, if that's what they choose to do.

Just my opinion, don't get all BUTT HURT if my opinion doesn't match with your opinion. You can do whatever the f**k you wanna do.

ENGLAND SOUTHERN QUAL FOR ARNOLDS AM:

Events:

1. Log Max starting at 130kg

2 .Yoke 400kg's 15m drop turn 15m back

3 .Dumbell medley 60,70,80,90,100 .60sec's

4 .Farmers 150kg 15m up 15m back

5 .Deadlift reps 300kg 60sec's [straps only]

I'm sorry, if at 120 you cant do most of the above, and with some, maybe not all do it rapidly/do 3-4 implements, then you're just not strong enough

Fair point with regards to Bodypower , but with regards to top level 105s in general should they have to jump straight into open level comps ( if that is what they are aiming for) with a big weight disadvantage or enter inter comps which are below their experience level? That is where I think a 120k class would come into its own.

I would like to point out aswell, that there are u105 guys that really restrict themselves to stay in the 105's seemingly because opens is too big of a jump. These people would really benefit from this category as a stepping block like i said before.

Also if the 120kg division did kick off maybe it would do what the 90's did but to the opens, which seemed to be the u90's weights kept going up which then pushed the 105 standard up. Wasnt the only factor but thats what it seemed to do at least.

Without reading all the posts, it's a no brainer to me. It's a HUGE step to jump from competing at 16 stone ish to going head to head with guys potentially 30 stone. What other sport would have such a mismatched, erm, match?
