This is an interesting idea and I'll be curious to see if it pans out when Englands strongest man rolls around and the guys can't use straps.
Personally I don't think it will have a huge impact.

At the massive weights, it makes a difference.

Thor couldn't pull 430kg without straps then later that year he nearly hit 501kg at the Arnolds.

You simply can't yank the bar off the floor when you have to grip it (with the exception of hook grip), you have to feed the power in far more gradually.

Also there is the issue of bloat.
You can't bang all the orals in the world down your neck as your hands bloat up and it has a big impact on your grip strength.

No way does Eddie nearly lock 500kg out of he didn't have straps on

Personally, until someone deadlifts 500kg, raw, it hasn't been done. And Eddie is claiming to be the first human to deadlift 500kg, he is wrong. Imo.

Does that apply to magnusons 460kg belted lift?

What’s the heaviest no aid equipment deadlift then? Doesn’t seem to be a wiki for this. Anyone got the Guinness Record book handy?

500kg deadlift belt only

Someone will do it someday

What about straps? Surely impossible without them

I didn't set out to stir or upset anyone. it's just that I believe you can't compare a strapless lift in a powerlifting competition that is strictly judged for continuous movement with a strongman deadlift. Most of the big deadlift attempts I see failing at international events are down to the grip giving out rather than lack of strength. Personally, I think Andy Bolton's 457.5 is the best deadlift in history. The 455 was the first ever 1000 pound deadlift, so there's a case for that one, but the 457.5 was technically better. Best deadlift I've ever seem in the flesh? Possibly Eric Gunhamn's 370.5 in 2015, breaking the open world record as a junior. Other contenders are Julian Johannsson's 400 in 2018 and felix's 400 in Colne.

If it's impossible, then you shouldn't compensate to make it possible.

I agree with you

I put Tom Martins 410 in that comp where he went deadlift only at 110kg bw as one of my favourite lifts in recent years

It was done with just a belt too

Certainly better than someone 30-50kg heavier hitching another 40kg in straps

Thats because most self respecting strongmen should have a decent grip, imagine a short arse with stubby fingers and immense strength but s**t grip the straps will help him lift 200kg or more.
I have never heard of anyone getting more than 100kg from wraps (20kg for me)
I did my pb deadlift strapless (310) and could pull 420 from the rack no straps.

I get nothing from straps. Mixed grip/hook grip/straps all give me 40kg over my DOH. I think Shaw and Martins could both pull closeish to their PBs without straps. Heinla on the other hand would be way off. Depends on the athlete.

This is all a bit silly isn't it. When Ed pulled 400 for reps with no belt and no hitching but straps was that a thing of beauty or was that not a deadlift? Some powerlifters get 50kg out of wraps, a lot more than most get out of straps

It is baffling that john never made it to UKs. The guy was a monster.

I always thought that but he never moved that well so always dropped a lot of points, he missed out by one spot in 2016
