| Rob | Making sure bands are even | 12-07-2007 @ 10:02 | |

I use the method of putting one side of the band at either end of the bar and then stretch it under the bench, but sometimes one side seems to have a lot more tension than the other.

Scotbasher - forever Member 59, 2115 posts | The method we use to ensure even tension is to place the bar on the bench pad then loop the band over one end, go under the bench then loop it over the other end of the bar,the bar is then lifted onto the rack. Ensure the bands are looped over at about shoulder width, depending on the type of bands you may need to put a block of wood or pad etc under the bench to ensure the bands dont go slack when the bar is resting on your chest. We favour this method over stretching the bands on the outside of the plates as any slight asymetry in band tension is acting at a greater distance from the effective roll centre (ie a greater moment) and it then feels odd! If you want any photos I can send you some at the weekend

Scotbasher - forever Member 59, 2115 posts | Which bands did you end up getting? we use a range of them depending how much lockout tension we require. The most I can manage is 2x darkblue bands they're about 50mm wide by 6mm thick(just about the toughest you can get) with 60kg on the bar and I can just get 5/6 reps out. This effectively makes it a tricep exercise at the top and simulates very well what happens when you wear a bench shirt. Before bands we used chains for quite a while, we fastened a bunch to either end of the bar and as it lowers onto the floor it deloads and obviously on the ascent stage it adds to the load on the bar. Typically we used 20-30kg of chain per side. You got some strange looks in the gym when using this setup!

I really like the bands on close grip bench in particular.
