I'm Sam and I'm 22.

Started lifting properly at 18 after a knee injury stopped me from playing sports. I've got my first strongman comp coming up in a week and three powerlifting meets later this year, so I've decided to start logging.

Stats:

Age: 22
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 105kg

Squat: 210kg as of today
Bench Press: 145kg touch and go, 132.5kg paused
Deadlift: 245kg conventional/no belt, 242.5kg sumo as of this week
Overhead: 110kg (push press), 85kg (strict), 102.5kg (log)

Sunday, 23.6.2013 - Competition - Kilcock's Strongest Man

My first ever competition.

Event 1: Rope and Harness Truck Pull

This was what I'd been most nervous, but the truck was smaller than I had anticipated and getting it moving wasn't too bad. Staying low was hard because keeping tension on the rope was difficult, I got it to the end without any real struggle though. Not sure where I placed on this.

Event 2: Super Yoke (210kg) and Tyre (260kg) Flip Medley

For this, I had to take a 210kg Super yoke to the end of the course and then run back to the start and flip a 260kg tyre three times. The yoke wasn't too bad, I took it slowly because I'd only done this once before and I took it well over the line to be sure. The tyre was difficult, I've flipped a tyre before but nothing ever close to this weight. It was a struggle but I got it done. I have no idea where I finished on this.

Event 3: Overhead Medley

60kg keg clean and press for one rep, 50kg giant dumbbell for one rep and then as many reps as possible with an 85kg train axle in the remaining time. The man with the most total reps wins the event.

The keg was easy, I was able to one motion it, if a little awkwardly. The dumbbell also went up without any real difficulty. I did five on the axle with relative ease and that put me in the lead, so I stopped there. I took first in this event.

Event 4: 100kg Atlas Stone Over Bar For Reps

I wasn't sure how this was going to go, as I'd only put a stone over a bar for one rep ever. I was prepared to take just one rep on this.

It felt surprisingly light from the ground when I picked it up, adrenaline and tacky obviously make a huge difference. I was able to get the first two reps over the bar comfortably and the third wasn't much harder. Rep four was easy from the ground again but I hit the bar and I had to regain my balance a bit before getting it over. Rep five took any remaining energy I had to get my hips through on it to get it up. By that stage I didn't have time left to get another one anyway. Huge PR here.

Event 5: Last Man Standing Keg Toss

14kg keg over a bar, two attempts in forty five seconds, if you either miss twice, or time expires, you're out. Height is increased each round.

Round 1: Keg went over the bar very comfortably on the first attempt.
Round 2: Keg clips the top of the sign but goes over. I threw this one from too close to the bar and it was still going up by the time it went over.
Round 3: I moved away from the bar a bit for this one and the keg went over easily.
Round 4: Keg clips the bar on the way over, but it goes over.
Round 5: Just two of us left now, I stand a bit close again and it goes into the sign twice.

Second place in this event.

Event 6: Head To Head Loading Race

60kg keg, 75kg stone, 70kg sandbag onto a platform for time.

Coming in to this I knew that I could take at least third if I beat the guy I was up against. Keg came up easily, loaded it comfortably. The stone was the same. The sandbag was a little awkward, but it was okay to load.

Results:

I took third out of five. First and second place both had 17 points and went to countback, I had 15. I'm extremely happy with this for my first competition. I can't wait to compete again.
