Good work on the squats Dave, impressive stuff with a bad hip. Are you off to the doctors today?

Hello Adam and all,

Went to see the consultant yesterday and things are looking up, as I start my treatment on 15th of Sept.
Its athree injections, one per month up until November and I have to continue my training and not stop all together as I feared he might say.
He ridiculed my GP's opinion that I should stop lifting and reckons that these (very painful)jabs will cure my condition .Hurrah!
Well we better just wait and see, but it takes about 12 weeks before you see the results, he said.

I went down early to deadlift yeterday afternoon and it was pretty crap,Maybe I was a bit huuried as I had to take the mrs out for a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I don't know but I struggled to pull a couple with 250kg, but hell thats deadlifting for you!
I am off to Scotland tomorrow so don't know how training will go and I might just have a de-load week.

Things are looking up though.
Cheers,
Dave.

That sounds like good news. And as you say, you don't have to give up training so you should be able to at least maintain the level you are at now.

Ah well, had my first set of Sclerosant injections today. Only took about 5 minutes and was no more painful than the accupuncture I have had recently!
After a couple of hours my buttock felt numb and I had a slight throbbing sensation in my very lower back.

Full of enthusiasm I went down to the gym for my deadlifting session(after all the leaflet said that there should be no need to rest and that you should resume normal activity right away).
Weights went easy and I worked up to one double with 250kg and left convential deadlifting at that.

I then went on to 3 sets of 8 reps in the straight leg deadlift working up from 100kg to 140.Done in a very slow fashion this was actually quite grueling but I will stick to it until I can do my favourite good mornings.
Then it was feet together leg press, sets of 8 and working up to 340kg, I followed with sets of 8 on the hammer row machine and finished off the night with a couple of sets for my abdominals.

I am not unhappy and am hopeful that I can soon start some of my cycles and get up to pulling at least 260kg for a couple.
Decided to try squatting on Thursday, this week and will let you know how that goes. Oh and I think I will get some Woody bands to help my bench lockout.

Cheers,
Dave.

Seems like you had a decent session. At least your strength isn't going down while you recover from the hip injury. How did the squats go?

Well couldnt squat on Thursday as I must be comung down with something, just felt sooo tired and went to bed at 6:00, slept right through til morning.

Tried to squat today Friday but all my joints were hurting like hell and my ass, where the jabs went in is totally numb(probably a good sign)so I my session was not very good at all,
only went up to 220 for a triple then down to 180 for 8, sweating like a beast and getting very light headed I decided to call it a day at that, but I still have high hopes for the next few weeks.
Me and the mrs are going to Egypt for a week on the 12th of October and hopefully by then things will be looking up.

Dave.
Oh yeah and Adam, are you gaining weight now as your poundages are looking good?

Well tonights session was a load of old crap, something has gone wrong with my arms and I cannot grip f**kall without a lot of pain, now this may be because I am not using my customary anti-inflammatories since they conflict with my sclerosant injections.
Anyway all I did was a 5 sets of pulldowns, 5sets of dumbell rows and 4 sets of wide stance good mornings working up to 140kg for 8, hurt like hell in the hip and forearms,
I then did 3 sets of 10 hypers with 20kg plate behind my head followed by my patent crunch/legraise exercise for my abs(I do believe that its important to retain strong abs)and went home.

So you see no deadlifts at all this week, but thats not a bad thing.

Dave.

140K for 8 on good mornings is hardly a crap session. At least you are still able to work around the injury without making it worse.

Fridays squat session was a bit odd, something is definitely happening to my hip, it feels numb and I have now quite a lot of pain in my lower back for a lot of the time.
For this reason I was very tentative with my warmups.
my usual 2 sets of 8 with 60kg actually felt quite heavy! but as I went along with 100x5.140x3.180x2 then 220x2 I started to feel alright although I did feel pain in the depth of my hip joint, so at that I droped to 180x8, then 3x5 close pause squats with 140 and finished with 2x12 with 100 close stance.
Big pump in my legs and back felt ok so moved onto 3 sets of extensions, 4 sets of leg curls and my usual 2 sets of 20rep calf raise and went home.

Will talk about deadlifts next

Monday night deadlifts.

Decided to test my hip with an old Ed Coan cycle and it called for 2 work sets with a paltry 175kg for sets of 10 reps, sounds easy you might say for someone who always opens in comp with 260/270kg. Not a bit of it!
I was panting like an old horse and my face looked like a beetroot, but the weight didn't feel too heavy and I done the reps in a controlled fashion.
Then I moved onto supported rows for 6 sets up and down in weight for sets of 10. I thought about some good mornings but the routine does not call for much else so finished off with my patent ab exercise and went home.
feeling like I could have done more but thats what the early part of these cycles should be like. anyway my hip did hurt but not as much as it has in the past, where I could not do more than a couple of reps with any weight, so heres hoping!

Cheers and thanks for listening to a silly old bugger trying to retain his identity as a powerlifter

Hi all,

Well with all the optimism in the world I started my 14 week squat power cycle tonight, It starts on 175kg for 2 sets of 10reps, well I did it and with a moderately close stance, it went ok, they were ass to the floor and I used my belt loose and a pair of soft kneewraps just wrapped on loosely as well.
I was panting like an old horse and my legs were shaking and pumped up like balloons. I then done a couple of warm down sets of 12 with 100kg no wraps or belt, 3 sets of leg extensions and 4 sets of leg curls.

Finished off the workout with my usual 2 sets of 20 rep standing calf raises and I am feeling good!no hip pain.

Oh I forgot to mention I had a drink of that Dorian Yates NOXPUMP and I felt like I was flying!hope I get some sleep tonight.

Cheers,
Dave.

No hip pain is great news! Of course doing sets of 10 may not be the best way to ease yourself back in.Tongue

Good luck with the cycle mate.

Ah well we are of to Egypt tomorrow so I thought I had better post last weeks training.

My cycle cals for two weeks of 10 rep sets on the same weight so on deadlift '175kg it seemed a bit easier than last week. then my usual supported rows followed by ab work then home.

Bench I am follwing the same and yet again my 2 sets of 10reps felt easier than last week, I always follow up bench with more close grip bench then 2 sets of illegal wide grip.

Friday squats, lots of folk at work with bad colds and I think thats what I have got.All day I felt dizzy at work and though I managed my first set of 10 with 175kg I could not stand under the bar without feeling like I was going to fall over, on my second so called it a day on squats done some leg extensions, some leg curls and calves and went home with my head in my hands in disappointment. Heres hoping I will be better when I get back from my holiday.

Cheers,
Dave.

Ah well looks like my manky leg has nearly healed up and I had my second round of sclerosant injections into my hip last Monday, so I resumed my cycle on deadlifts tonight.
remember that previously I could not peform any more than 3 reps with any sort of weight without great pain.
Well tonight my work weight was 190kg and with this I managed 1 set of 10 and one set of 9 reps. Yes there was pain there but it was bearable and the hardest thing was the aerobic quality of the (relatively)high rep range.
I was actually quite pleased and although not handling anything heavy, it feels like the old cycles we used to do when I was strong.
I finished off with 4 sets of long pulley rows(another movement I have been unable to perform for a long while, then 4 sets of 8 rep chins and just to finish off with a bit lower back pump, 4 sets of pull throughs.
of course I still done my usual abs at the very end and went home knackered but kinda happy and optimistic.
The rep range changes to 5 (hurrah) next week.

Cheers all,
Dave.
