Have many of you guys mixed strengt trainig at all with playing amateur sports?

I'm training for weightlifting and some general strength but am taking up American football as a lineman.
I find it goes fairly well together as size, strength and speed are important although the conditioning needs to be Improved

Wonder if you guys hae any advice on managing training etc?

Thanks

Yes I manage it really well and think we all can too!

I do three weightlifting sessions a week

I keep very active, eat well and go to bed and wake up earlier than most.

I find there is a balance to almost everything

It's very easy if you are organised and have some discipline... Consistency is key

Further advise would be to have a routine... One that you can follow and acts as a bench mark you can a accomplish even when the unexpected happens

Frequency is a preference and nothing more... So another bit of good advise would be to make sure that your routine absolutely covers all key areas that are important to yourself

I went back and played rugby a few years ago after a 17 year break. I ended up getting the players player of the year award and I put it down to the fact that I got stronger as the season went on but the better players faded. I found doing 2 days a week was ideal for me, and I tried to make sure I had at least 2 days off lifting before games. I used the template from 531 For Football.

Enjoyed it, just started training again for this season... Who ya playing for... Easier to manage training than rugby... But with rugby we trained twice a week and then a game... With "football" it's either training or game once a week..

Thanks for the replys.

It's for leeds Bobcats. They have a few junior teams and after getting a senior team together the have been put into the leagues so quite an exciting season coming up.

I currently manage 2 days of weightlifting and one more strength focused.
I do find I need some flexibility due to having issues at home but 2 days of weightlifting and game dy and training day sounds good.

Hoping with American football training for strength and explosiveness help being on the line.

And like you say regularly get the sleep needed and eat well and eat enough.

just try and keep it simple, especially once the season starts,
depending on how many days your going to train per wk and how many gym sessions you think you'll fit in,i would just concentrate on squats, bench, flat and incline, keep grip narrower and work the tri's to simulate where your hands would be when firing of the line and blocking.. (you offence or defence, or both?)
and if not already doing them get your head round the tech of power cleans. And do a lot of twisty core stuff, if you have a gym with cable x-over theres loads of variables you can do for core that with have huge carryover to playing.
time permitting you can then do any other supplemental exercise you can cram in.
After the first game most guys I know will train hurt, and its usually a case of maintaining your strength as best you can through the season.

What happened to the Leeds Cougars? remember they had a Tail back (Tiggy Bell) back in the 80's, who had some quick feet.

Good luck anyway, when does the domestic season start?

It will be most likely both ways. They seemed quite happy with my agility or showed promise so imagine defence a lot.
And in my sure I've only recently foun the sport from years f not like ing any sports

I train for weightlifting and compete in that so my focus is te oly lifts but trying to put a good amount of squats in and also now get some bench work going. I currently train 3 day a week in te gym but imagine it will go down to 2 with a game day and practise day.

The season starts around April time I've been told.

I'm the S&C coach for a multiple championship winning American football team, and it's entirely possible.

I have around 60 guys lifting regularly and fitting it around their football training. It's about balance and specificity, along with intelligent crossover with the PL or WL the individual wants to pursue etc.

My guys train twice a week, and a game.

Typically they will also have two full body strength and assistance sessions, and a power and speed session.

That's good to know

My main issue is getting the work in, due to family Waltham I often can't make the gym. I try to do what I can at home as can do some jumps and dbell work etc when I have to stay at home and can't get to the weightlifting club days.
If I work out a shedule that can be flexible and get the work I need in, sleep well and eat well this year should be fun.
