What would you guys say is the key to having a good grip?

The reason I ask, is there was a little fun challenge a few weeks ago set by Strom. Basically you had to complete 3 grippers to win. 150, 250, and 350.

Only 1 person completed it over the course of the 2 weeks, lots of VERY strong power lifters couldn't close the 350 and several giants live strongmen couldn't either.

The winner was an average lifter who wasn't particularly huge in size or strength.

What would you say, is the key?

Well that's crush grip and specifically grippers not grip strength in general. Grip is ultra specific to each event but the key here would be training grippers. Most people don't train crush grip full stop so couldn't do a HG350 anyway but grippers involve a lot of technique so specific training is pretty vital unless you have used them a lot in the past.

An no you don't have to be massive to be good at them I could do several reps on a HG350 when I was 15 stone but definitely having jacked hands and forearms help.

How does the 350 compare to COC?

I would think hand size plays a part in grippers.

Apart from that, being a scaffolder is probably the best training you can do, other than specific training.

My hands are massive and i suck at grippers.
Very good at DOH and plate pinches tho which i think is helped by my hand size and copius amounts of insulina.

Yeah fair enough, that makes sense. I guess axle doh big hands would help a lot too.

Just think for grippers, my hands are small enough that for a credit card close I can only just get my fingertips over. If they were 1cm longer it would make it much easier for me. I guess then any bigger perhaps doesn’t help at all.

They vary all over the show but somewhere between a 3 and 3.5 on average

There's a fine line, but average hands are really what's typically best as that's what they are designed for. People assume big hands are better because bigger handed guys tend to do better first try doing no set closes without knowing the technique but with the technique it's a different story. For wider closes like credit card you need to role your fingers on if smaller handed, bigger handed it's not as much of an issue but smaller hands have a massive amount more leverage to a big hand as the fingers are much closer to the end of the gripper handles as opposed to spread over the whole thing like Brian Shaw's.

Still got a little bit of strength

Some people just naturally have sinewy forearms and a strong grip. Other people need to work harder.

Mine is/was adequate. It wasn't a weak link when I was doing strongman. I do hate grippers though. They aren't worth my time now and probably never were.

I have closed a coc 2 with little experience

I have a 2.5 and I have came close to closing it, but I am too lazy to work with them

The only grip work I do is heavy farmer holds and doh AXLE.

I have long fingers, though they are quite thin

That’s all very clear and makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Thanks, I almost closed a COC 2 at first time of trying (a long time ago) my work as a chippy had given me a good grip. Never managed a 3 though.
