You have to be fooking mental to want to play it mind - after all getting tackled by a 250lb man wearing a crash helmet who runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds is probably not on anyone's bucket list. On a side note, I've always thought that if America took rugby to it's bosom - they'd be world champs in no time at all.

I think with how good their college structure is, this could be the case for any sports. But they stick to sports that only they do!

There's tension on each separate play (unlike football or rugby, where it's more continuous, and only really builds when they get close to the goal line), but I understand that all the stoppage can make it look boring.

American football can be a bit boring if you don't know anything about it. It's the same for Rugby. It made no sense to me for a long time because it just looked like dudes running around tossing a ball, but as I got to talk with a few other fans and they let me in on what was happening, the game became exciting. You're right though Dan, the hits are absolutely mental! Akin to a car crash is what was shown on the Sports Science tv show. Worst hit I ever took was getting "earholed" (a helmet to helmet tackle from the side) and knocked my helmet off and everything looked white for what felt like 30 sec. It was the first and only time I ever got to run the ball though (was a nose tackle and offensive tackle and had only recovered a fumble) so it was worth it. Haha! P.S. my team is number one in the league so I am a happy fan! Go Seahawks!

Little known fact because it's not true, France were the first ever Rugby gold medalists... The current US squad do have a very good 7s team mind you! Will be a long time before they are a force to match the big teams in 15s though, having the athletes is only half the battle, you need a huge amount of good coaches and for that to work over a decade or more to actually feed in to a country's success.

Wont ever happen During/after WC 1994 all's we heard were how the states would be a world force in football within 15-20 years later 20 years later in Rio, they will be lucky to make it to the quarters

Sporting success is about more than athletes, it's about a culture. If you look at countries that are good at football, they live for it, it's ingrained in them from the year dot. Exactly the same with countries that are good at rugby. Even in Italy where rugby is now a big sport, it's only part of the 'culture' in a a small part of the country. Just like we'll never be that good at basketball, even though it is now played quite widely.

Football however is being seen as a good alternative to the main sports they have and is growing. You dont have to be 250lbs+ or over 6'6" to play at a decent level or be able to smash a ball out of the ball park. Rugby is boring for me and so is the NFL. I watch the hits on youtube but other than that its zzzzzzzzzz

Like all sports, the more of it you understand, the more enjoyable it is to watch. same here, one you understand the rules and even some of the offesive and defensive plays then it makes it more enjoyable.
