Ok guys, yet again people who were not there and don't know the situation are commenting on things they didn't know about. Chris gearing tried to pull the truck and could not shift if an inch. Chris weighs 25 stone and can squat 400 kg and was leading the whole comp. If he could not shift it the likelihood was no one could. We changed it to a truck pull to try and make it an event that everyone could at least score on. We changed it to a truck pull however it was on a slight down hill gradient. No matter how much mark Kingham complains had the driver not braked he would have run mark over. Yes this was unfortunate and we changed it to a safer truck push. Both mark and Chris went last to enable them to recover. To put this in perspective mark was not at any time in contention for a qualifying place. Chris who also happens to be one of the guys that people on this forum suggested was not good enough to compete in this final, won the event. In fact hd did not even need to do the last event but did a token effort. The top 5 were the top five throughout so once again guys stop bleating. Respect that you were beaten on the day and stop griping. A huge amount of effort goes into these comps and until you have held a comp of these weights and standards maybe you should keep quiet. I remind you yet again this event was organised for your benefit for absolutely no gain. It would actually be quiet nice if it was appreciated. We changed an levent for safety reasons. We could not do it. I'm sure none of you would be happy if we had allowed you to be run over. The option was to change the event. I must also reiterate that the athletes were asked what they wanted to do. They voted to do the truck push. Having voted for it I'm afraid to moan afterwards is sour grapes. Mark was beaten on the day by 5 stronger more consistent guys.

And as we have just mentioned several tines three of these guys were in the Englands final last year and where the weights were way above these qualifying totals. If we knew they were incapable of lifting we would never have allowed them through as we know more than anyone what Glen wants and we believe in keeping the integrity of the comp. Guys the bottom line is you had your chance to do your qualifier and if you didn't qualify it is because you were not strong enough on the day. Stop griping. It achieves nothing. Had we said nothing and posted the names of those that qualified from the south this discussion would nor be happening. No one would have been the wiser and those that were not strong enough to come in the top four of the miss and northern would have had no choice but accept that they didn't get through. It's never perfect. The Strongest guy in the north may have been injured on the day of the qualifier and not got through. That's life I'm afraid. In the future we hope to be looking at the set up of the qualifiers to try and iron out all the issues that have arisen over recent years. All we can do is move forward

Please can you all stop bring so pathetic. There would have been a qualifier if more people had entered. Would it really have made you all feel better to make the four run through a comp despite knowing they would all qualify. The same four would have qualified. It makes no difference. Three if these guys made the Englands final last year so any question of ability is not valid. I have no clue how many entered the other regional qualifiers as all that matters is that the top four qualified. Just to add none of them train at ministry of muscle
As for the final being in the south, we run the final out of fairness. We don't compete and cannot be accused of fixing events that suit ourselves or have a bias to those in our training camp.
We have worked with Glen for several years now and we know the standard that he wants. To reiterate we lose financially to do it yet we put on one of the best comps. In all honesty if travelling south really is an issue maybe you should be reconsidering entering at all as the final is in Ireland and I can assure you it won't be held anywhere else.
» UKSC Englands Strongest Man Final 2012 (Go to post)05-05-2012 @ 10:23
Ok just a word. These competitions are run on behalf of Glen Ross and Glen has overall control over how things are run. Every effort is made to make these competitions fair and impartial. We appreciate having to travel is inconvenient but before whinging and moaning about comps location or events please bear in mind that these qualifiers and finals are not local tin pot shows held by gym owners for commercial gain. These comps are held to accommodate true strongmen who have the capability and skill to go on to represent their country however these competitions are put on at a finacial loss by the promoters. A huge amount of time effort and money is put in to hold a good quality, professional comp with decent judging and events of a standard that is far above many others and all for no gain. so please before being quick to criticise and moan bear in mind that the people facilitating your progression in strongman and are doing it entirely from good will and actually lose financially to allow it to happen.

Secondly we have posted the final details several times on the competition page of sugden but for some reason it has yet to be added. The final will be on 9th June at Preston Hall, The Royal British Legion Village, Aylesford, Kent. ME20 7NJ.
The details of the events will follow very shortly.

As we try very hard to be we have been open about this.
Had we said nothing and these guys gone through no one would be any the wiser. The bottom line is no one else entered.
None of these guys asked for it this way or want it this way but UKSC also have a rule that you can only qualify in your area ie northerners do the north qualifier. It would be equally unfair to change this just because there was a lack of interest or ability in the South. The northern and midland guys still have the same opportunity to qualify as before. No one is saying this is ideal and it is not what we will be looking at doing in the future. Last years Southern qualifier had over 20 guys in it but in reality only 5 or 6 were ever going to be in contention. The guys going through are in reality the top we have n the south at the moment

Hi Everyone,
We would just like to clarify the situation here.
The U.K's strongest Man is one of the biggest comps this country does. The Southern Qualifier is always in April and nearly always on this weekend. It is very difficult to organise a competiton at the moment that does not clash with anything else as there are so many being held.

This year the organisers of the English regional qualifiers came together to agree the events so that the 3 seperate qualifiers were similar and fair and one wasnt easier than the others. This was done to standardise the levels of competitors who get to the England's finals and make sure one regional qualifier was not easier than the others.
The weights in the qualifiers have to be decent as in all honesty and as you know the weights for the England's Final are heavier.
We dont want to hold a competiton where the weights are easily achievable or not really beyond the reach of most averagely strong people. We are trying to find the strongest and unfortunately this will mean that numerous people will be unable to compete as the weights are just too heavy. There is no point having light weights in the Southern qualifier. If you can only do one or two reps there is no way you will be able to compete with the heavier weights in the England's final.

We are after all trying to find the strongest man in the UK.
This is a big comp with the potential to get to the final in Belfast and get on the Televised comp.
There was a poor response to the competition and it has been agreed that the 4 that did enter are to go straight through to the Englands final. There is little point risking injury for no real benefit as they will qualify anyway

The bottom line is out of the 4 that are going through to the England's final, Paul Carter has made the UK final several times and has finished top 3, Chris Gearing and Lloyd Renals both made the England's final last year from the South and therefore have proved their ability. The final place is Will Egan and he has come on. I don't think in reality we would have got much better. I cant think of anyone else who is a real contender in the South at the moment. I dont think the quality of the people who qualified has been compromised.

These 4 need to bring their passports to the Englands final.

All we can do is get cracking on preparing for the England's. The details of events will be released as soon as, but the England's final be on the 9th June. This date was released some time ago and it is being held at a large charity event in at Preston Hall, The Royal British Legion Village in Aylesford. This event runs every year and the date for the event was fixed by the Royal British Legion.
This will be a good day.Hope to see you all there
