Dips are more aligned to decline bench than incline.

Tom,
I would suggest biting the bullet seeing your Doc and telling them you want to see a specialist ortho privately. Do some research for the best one in your area. Your nearest BUPA hospital will probably list them and give profiles on their website. A personal recommendation may be better still.
Once referred pay to see him privately and at least see what he has to say. That means you have jumped the first part of the nhs queue.
He will almost certainly want an mri done. You can then find out the private cost or how long to wait if he puts you on his nhs list. If he is sympathetic and you can convince him you are in pain and struggling to work etc or he is sport orientated and you tell him you are a world record holder it could make a difference. You'll need to judge how to play this a bit and make your choice.

If a GP refers you to a physio most private insurer schemes allow you 6 sessions within 6 weeks. Basically they are saying if a Physio cannot diagnose and sort the issue or at least have it well on the way to recovery then a more specialist investigation is required.
Getting a nhs referral from a GP can be hit and miss. Ideally you need the right gp who is sympathetic to your sport or has before becoming a gp specialised or had interest in the area of concern. If not it can be hard work.
That said if you ask for a private referral they will normally oblige, as it does not cost "them/their practice/trust" or the nhs anything.
Again selection of the specialist is important as even at this level there is difference in opinions and sympathies for things like sport. A decent specialist probably £130-£200 for initial consultation and £350ish for mri, followed by a revisit to specialist maybe £70-100. This hopefully gets the proper diagnoses.
Then depending on the sympathies etc of the specialist and your choice you may have an option to pay or to go nhs.
The more pain you have and less able you are to work the more likely you are to get things done quicker on nhs.

An initial £500-£600 sounds a lot but this can easily be wasted on continual visits back toa physio.

My advice is apply the 6 session/6 week rule with physios. It's what the private health insurers do and they wnat to spend as little as possible.

Tom,
I have been following your progress for a long while now - or lack of it more recently unfortunately.
You say your Physio says you have ligament damage between L3 and L4 causing nerve impingement.
Is this based on just doing physical tests and checking symptoms or have you actually had an MRI scan and seen a Orthopaedic Consultant.
Physio's can be really good but they do not have all the tools for a proper analysis. My physio, although highly thought of in the sports world, would be the first to admit there is no substitute for a proper diagnosis. He has referred me to an Ortho for MRI scans for several problems. I guess I'm lucky here because he is also a friend and not just looking to take money off me and keep getting me back to see him.
Once these more complex problems are diagnosed then yes a good physio can do a lot to help things along.

In summary the main thing is to do is get a proper diagnosis. That almost certainly means and MRI and may even involve investigative key-hole surgery.

That said you may have already seen an Ortho and had an MRI but I do not recall you saying so on your blog.

What about if someone takes the last of something you want and puts it in their trolley.
Do you reckon if you want it you can just take it from their trolley and put it in yours?
If they say "that's mine", you can just say "no it's not , because you have not paid for it yet!"
Guess it depends on if they are harder than you lol!

I use City Gym in Pompey and would recommend it.
Went back there a year ago after over 20 years away from any weights.
