I know its not strength related and I apologise for that but I am after a little advice and I know there are some nutrition gurus on here.

My 14 year old son is currently having trials for a football academy and things are looking promising. Due to the higher intensity and frequency of his training sessions I have increased his food intake to cope with the demand. I ensure that he eats a well balanced diet but understand he is only 14 so dont do silly things with his diet like macros etc.

Due to my work hours and his school we only really get around 15 mins to change and then get him to his training. I ensure that he has something to eat before training as it usually lasts around 2 hours. For convenience though last night I made him a shake (milk, peanut butter, banana and a little whey protein) which he gulped down and said that it gave him better energy and concentration at training as it didnt sit so heavy on his stomach like a meal would. So my question is this; what home made PWO shakes would you recommend for my aspiring pro footballer? I would like to avoid using whey protein and would listen to any recommendations.

I'd go with what you already have but I'd stick abit of dextrose in and some oats.

yeah thought about oats, ill try that tonight. I just wanted to have a couple of different recipes so that he didnt get bored with flavours etc

If I removed the whey protein (to keep cost down) do you think it would be okay to crack an egg or two in there also?

I wouldnt be too concerned with protein pre-training tbh especially as the milk will have some in. I'd be careful with raw eggs but you could just boil a couple for him to eat with the shake, or boil them and then put them in.

i second oats,

If you have a good blender/smoothie maker you will barely notice them. I have one of those nutribullet things which does a good job, my old one was crap and used leave big lumps of oats in which were less than pleasant to 'drink'.

I'd leave the eggs, you're not going to get a huge protein or energy hit out of a couple and you always risk salmonella which could prove catastrophic if he has important games in front of scouts etc.

As Paul said, dextrose would be a good addition. That way you would have a variety of energy sources from lactose, dextrose, fructose, complex carbs and fats. Not much need for protein 'pre workout' in this case.

not as silly as it sounds.

At 14 my metabolic rate was as high as a polar Bears.

My advise is to promote good clean foods with calorific semi-healthy foods such as choc milk and flapjacks...these are good and easy to make...add nuts seeds dates apricots etc and don't get to hung up on the sugar butter and syrup.

as others have said..milk instead of protein shakes unless hes adding moderate weights to his training!

In all seriousness though I just feel that at 14 he should be able to absorb enough nutrients through eating and drinking 'normal' foods that I dont want to start supplementing his diet just yet.

Some really good advice here thankyou, I will take on board all of your comments and come up with a few different recipes for him to try.

Just wanted to let you all know though that he was successful with his trial and has been selected for the academy team now and has since played a number of high profile games against big clubs including Man U and Chelsea. The academy deliver various educational lessons including nutrition, so im sure he will be given the best advice possible regarding what he should and shouldnt be eating.

If you want to focus on whole foods (good idea imo) then chocolate milk and a banana sounds pretty much spot on for macro and micro nutrients.
