Alright guys. Need a wee bit of help and advice. Today when I was deadlifting I thought I would try widening my stance a bit. Im scared to call it a sumo deadlift but what do you guys think about this?

I feel alot stronger deadlifting like that. The only video I have that you can compare it to is this.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't deadlift like that? And do you guys have any tips?

Cheers.

i could be wrong but i think i was reading some were one day the sumo stance was more suited to female lifters due to the differnt bone and muscle structre around the hip area, has something to do with the way they deliver power different to male lifters. i prefer the more conventional stance ive tried sumo and hated it, it hurts lol

You're first sentence is correct - you're wrong.

Certainly in IPF competitions probably something like 80% of the top male deadlifters use a sumo stance

Ozzie I know what you mean though.

I tried getting into the sumo position a few months ago and it just felt un-natural and weird but having seen just about everyone deadlifting sumo style in competitions I thought I should try it out.

no sumo in the olympic dragons comp !!

i was very strong on sumo but i found it you got the tech wrong the whole weight shifts to your lower back and i found as your in a 'wierd' stance your posterior chain is in a worse position to cope , I think it made me hit my wife in the face.

I was right to do so.

if you feel stronger stick with it, there is no reason you should stop. i wouldnt call it a sumo deadlift though.

its more of a semi-sumo deadlift, usually in the full sumo lift your feet are alot wider, basically your toes are just inside the weights. try coming out of the power rack so you have more room to experiment with foot position but make sure you dont go heavy when trying out new position, as sumo puts alot of strain on your groin/adductors.

in the video of your conventional deads it looks like your hips were quite high when you started to pull(although its hard to tell from the video, so i could be wrong), in the semi-sumo you seemed to get lower, maybe this is why you feel stronger.. lifting more with legs than back.

I actually tried touching my toes against the side of the rack just before I done that. I got down into position and It didnt feel strong at all. Infact you would have seen me shortening my stance if I had put the start of the video in.

You look better doing a sumo deadlift than conv. But the vid angle on the conv isn't great.

Your still stiff legging it, but that may work for some. I suggest continuing with the sumo's, but doing an conv variant as a assistance lift i.e RDL's.

Don't spend all day in the bottom position. Set up your feet bend down adn grab the bar. Then squat and pull youself down, take a big breath of air whilst doing this, get your chest up and hips tight, then drive like a mofo!

And where something that won't get in the way of your hands. Longer shorts or joggers will work better as your hands won't catch at the bottom and then pull the legs up.

I always thought and agree with one of the other earlier comments that Sumo recruits way more of the legs; so if you derive your strength from them then use that technique. If you've got a comparatively stronger lower back then conv works better...though at full pelt 1RM it looks nowhere near as elegant (or maybe that's just me..all back and no legs).

Whether it's psuedo/modifyed/semi it's still a sum deadlift. Getting your legs out near the plates will not be advantageous for many and dosn't take into account limb length etc. Plus it's probably best if you work your feet out gradually whilst you work on the basic tech of the lift.

Cheers for the advice guys.

Iain: What do you recommend to stop me stiff legging it? Is there anything I can concentrate on before locking my legs out?
