Thanks guys Happy . But 'notional' not a typo. Apparently under IPF rules you can't be a manager and a lifter at an international event. So I did what the manager would do without formally being the manager. Hence notional... Notional national manager does have a ring to it though... Wink

So you sticking with what you know on the shirts?
Still good you got 200 up under your own steam

Cheers Neil - may have misled you, The new shirt I refer to is a Rage X with wider sleeves than either of my old ones! If there had been any real tightness in the arms the third one would have gone.

First session back. Bit carlagged but it had to be done. Also a bit late for me, but as I say it had to be done. The plan for the next few weeks is to stick with 140 until I can do 5 x 5 with it, then up the weight.

60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 5
140 for 5
140 for 5
140 for 3 - farted on the third one and lost the plot
140 for 2 - maybe it wasn't the fart after all.

Really pleased to get three fives, that's a good starting point to improve on, we go again on Christmas Eve. A bit fatigued for any down sets, but Saturday is a new day. Thanks to the young lion for coming along to spot me.

Least it wasn't a shart

Bench. Not the best of training days. The plan was 5x5 with 140. That's the trouble with plans...

Bar for 20
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 4 - fourth ok, but failed fifth. Decided at this point to aim for 5 sets of 4 today
140 for 4 - easy, probably a fifth there
140 for 4 - balls out fourth
140 for 3 - no chance of a fourth, decided to do another 3 then a 2 to get 20 reps in
140 for 2 - oh s**t, failed third
140 for 1 - oh s**t, failed second, totally fatigued, enough is enough.

On the plus side, it's Christmas Eve, it was cosy by the fire and awful outside, it was the end of a long and tiring couple of weeks, and yet I still dragged my arse out and did something. That, and the fact that this performance won't be too hard to beat next time, are probably the only positives to take from the session. But at least the session happened. Merry Christmas to you all, ho ho ho. Happy

Bench. No training partners tonight, mainly because nearly everyone up here seems to have the flu. The weather is fearsome, and the temptation to use no partners as an excuse, avoid the filthy weather and stay in the warm was almost overwhelming. Almost!

Bench

60 for 8 x 2 sets
90 for 4 x 2 sets
120 for 2 x 2 sets
140 for 1 x 20 sets
Finish.

Pleased with that. 1 min rest between 1-5, 1 1/2 min between 6-10, 2 min between 10 and 20. I made a pact with myself that in the interests of safety I'd quit before 20 if I really struggled with a rep. Happily, the only struggle was on the last one, which may actually have been number 21. I lost count at one point and opted for the lower of the two possible numbers to make sure I didn't do one too few.

An interesting session. The unracking was probably harder than the actual pressing. I don't say this too often, but I was quite proud of myself tonight. Not so much for what I did, just for getting stuck in and overcoming the urge to stop.

I've not been in the sports centre since before I started my new job, which means it's well over a month since I worked my back. So, off to sports centre...

Ab Machine - 5 sets of 20 with 50 Kg

Lat Pulldowns - 40 for 10. 50 for 10, 60 for 10, 70 for 10 x 3 sets, 60 for 12, 50 for 15, 40 for 20

Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 35

And that was that, apart from steam, sauna and spa pool. Just the tonic for a cold, wet, windy Hebridean winter day.

I normally hate saunas but it must be a Godsend up there in this weather

Yeah, had the dogs out for a short walk before I trained and the wind was really cutting. 2 degrees in strong wind = hellish windchill, right deep down to the bone, so a sauna and steam was just what the doctor ordered. Happy

Last Bench of the year.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 4
140 for 4
140 for 3
140 for 3
140 for 2
120 for 6
100 for 10.

I seem to be going backwards again. Did three fives with 140 a few sessions ago. However on the 120s I suddenly realised what my problem is - triceps strength. My chest and shoulders were really strong, but my triceps just failed me completely. When I trained in a gym, I usually did some triceps assistance after bench. In the garage, I just do bench! I need to focus on the triceps a bit more and I reckon I'll be back to where I was in no time. On another positive note I finish the year with no left shoulder pain when I bench. There's still an underlying niggle, but it's not impeding my bench so I'll happily take that.

A happy new year to all my readers. Happy

Edit: I trained with a bar, not with a bat!

First bench session of the new year. Trained with John and Liam, who was home on holiday from the wilds of Lerwick.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 4
140 for 4
140 for 4
140 for 3
140 for 3
140 for 2

CGBP

100 for 8 x 3 sets.

Better than the last session, maybe strength endurance is improving a little, there was a third rep there on the last set but the target was 20 reps in total. Plus my body still feels in rest mode. I go back to work tomorrow after being off since the 22nd, and that will hopefully kick start my body back into life.

It's ages since I did close grip and it showed. Really felt the triceps, so they're in every session from now on.

All in all quite pleased with tonight, but the sooner I can get 20 reps with 140 in 4 sets instead of 6 the better.

Bench

The workout came at the end of a long mentally taxing day. Shovelled a bowl of porridge into me at 6 and felt surprisingly up for it a few minutes later.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 5
140 for 4
140 for 4
140 for 3 - damn
140 for 2 - double damn
140 for 2 - actually more there, but I'd done my 20.

Planned to finish with CGPB, but after about 4 reps on the first set my arm started burning about an inch up from my funny bone. Reckon slightly inflamed triceps insertion or tendon/ligament, so left it there.

It started so well tonight. Got a 5, then a couple of easy 4s, but suddenly the strength endurance went on the 4th set. Moving to a permanent Monday/Thursday bench routine next week, and hopefully I can get into the town gym twice a week to get more assistance work in.
AvatarThing
Solid work and looking forward to seeing where this Monday/Thursday plan will take you.
