Until recently I was out the lifting game for about 5 years.

Now I'm back I keep hearing about crossfit. I saw some lads doing something weird on a pull up bar, looked like they was trying to injur themselves if I'm honest. And they were also doing things with kettle bells that they'd have been better using dumbells for. I've seen them do other lifts, albeit in a strange way and they all do it in groups.

I swear I never came across this back when I was lifting.

What is it? What is it for and what is the point of it? Is it just a new keep fit craze?

a very social form of training. groups of young millennials with hipster tattoos and haircuts and trendy gym gear, congregate to throw some kettleballs about and pretend to be WL/PLers using low weights and bad technique. doing Oly or PL training for real is far too much sacrifice and requires training at an intensity level that means you aren't going to be able to look 'smoking hawt' for the obligatory 37 instagram updates that each training session requires.

Crossfit can be utter s**t or amazing. The elite guys are extremely impressive lifting wise and can perform some amazing feats. It does seem to attract a lot of douchey stereotypes however and at the lower end you will see some atrocious techniques. ALTHOUGH! Anyone that has been to a novice strongman comp or even relatively high level comps will have seen technique as bad as any crossfit fail, a lot of strongmen don't realise this

I couldn't be any less interested in it.

Basically the same thing as under 80kg strongman comps haha

I actually include some crossfit workouts, been getting a lot fitter by doing so. It gets a bad rep unfairly IMO.

This. People do it 'right' people do it 'wrong' same as any activity. Plenty of Crossfit fail vids out there, but then you can find plenty of shocking s**t done in any sport etc.

It does have a bit of a cliquey, douchebag feel at times, but most I know are cool and no different to guys and gals in other sports. You'll find most s**t spouted by people whom are not actually that great at it! Rings a bell Wink

I do dislike crossfit HQ, and I'd change some structure within Crossfit, but there you go. It's neither the devil nor saint.

However I will never call a gym a box. That's just retarded, but it's good branding I guess!

Personally I like it. Trained in a few crossfit gyms and typically they are well equipped. Most idiot stuff you seen done is due to s**t coaches but this is no different to any commercial gym.

Luckily the crossfit gyms I have been to have had great, well qualified coaches (UKSCA, greenwood weightlifting etc). The downside is hipster type guys, the upside is most crossfit gyms tend to have fairly hot women training in very short shorts

I can confirm this, My physio works out of a cross fit gym and waiting for my appointment slot is a sheer delight

to address the question.

crossfit is having as many 5kg bumperplates loaded as possible...

Cross fit is f**king hard.

I hate kips and that butterfly s**t, but the elite guys/gals are great athletes..

Has Shane Jerman moved over to it? I remember him saying he would like to compete.

He's a machine and would do well in It.

The rowing comp I did was in a crossfit gym (it was infact a crossfit event/comp)

the crossfit guy who I competed against , proper tonk with a fancy tee shirt ..... totally rocking the crossfit look.... well , he completely f**king died on the 13 minute row ....I was behind him , it was fabulous to see him start with a powerful 1:49 average .....towards the end he was HITTING 2:30 ... having a second or 2 rest between strokes ...... most satisfying......

crossfit is doing well though, it seems to capture the imagination of people who cant think of anything better to do.

Hmmm, I may retract my original statement.

This thread needs photos.

My own words come to haunt me

It's not circuit training, but that mode of exercise is used a lot. Too much.
