I bought 'Brawn' many years ago. If I'd stuck to the advise in it I'd have got a lot further a lot faster.
What do you think is silly about the concept of 'Hardgainers'? Ectomorphs of which I'm one are basically the recognised scientific classification of a hardgainer.
It never ceases to amaze me how some people will argue genetics isn't the single most important factor in being successful at most things and that if you don't have a natural aptitude for something then all the work in the world will only ever leave you struggling to compete with those that do despite their level of effort.

Sorry to butt in but is it the book Brawn your on about? Do you think it's worth a read?

Rick said:I was past thirty when I joined Adlington Barbell. I am fat, lazy, damaged in variety of ways, and have a demanding job, many hobbies, and little aptitude or discipline, which is why I'm still not very good. But I've won national titles and a commonwealth medal. I could certainly have done better. So can you.

Well very well done sir.

The answer of these questions wasn't going to determine whether I bother or not, was just curious about others progress I guess.

Thanks

It wouldn't stop me, no chance. Just to clarify, I'm not 30 lol, like I said I was trying to be hypothetical. I'm 27, so got a bit more time lol

Yeh I expect those replies Jack, was trying to be as hypothetical as possible.
Cheers for the replies, I know it all comes in time, just wondered if anyone knew their own average gains over a long period of time, is there even one

What kind of progress do you think it's possible to make in say 5 years? If injury free, natural, at a guess what would you say is an average for gains if training well & hard on your lifts? What do you aim for them to be and are they realistic?

How much do you think age plays a part, in terms of someone just turned 20 getting into it or someone who's 30 and been weight training years in a maintenance kind of way?

Would it be worth someone the age of 30 getting into something like strongman/powerlifting and having a real chance of getting to a decent level. I know it's worth it however far you may get, but you see what I mean?
All this been clean might I add how far would you expect to get and what would be a good achievement in your eyes?

VanillaGorilla said:'lifting' is becoming more and more popular. With crossfit and the internet and taking instagram pictures of meals and self shots of carefully downlit abs, endless bro sayings and tapout tshirts galore.

These people need a hobby, and they have chosen well.

They won't last though. Their interest will wane and disappear.

Real lifters will outlast them, they do it because they don't know how not to do it.

They can't tell you why, but they clamber up every time injury or fatigue or money or circumstance kickes them in the bo***cks.

It's not about self proclaimed 'hardcore' attitudes or trying to be some sort of warrior / viking obsessed gym dick. It's more about working on becoming a stronger person.

In the same way that sone people have to draw, or play music, or cut themselves, some people have to lift.

All very pat but it's what I think.

Post of the thread.

I don't know if some things have been taken out of context here as is easily done on forums but if it was meant lightheartedly I don't see the problem, we all feel like it now and then, I have a torn muscle (trap) at the mo and it pisses me off to have it nagging me for a week or two and times like that you jokingly say why bother but I still can't wait to get back in the gym and carry on.

Ditto! Children's tv?!

I personally would love to see squat more in all competitions, I think it gets left out quite a lot and its a great event. The depth thing was a joke though, surely it can't be that hard to find out the best height for all to squat at? Deeper doesn't necessarily mean the stronger will win, should just be an average height/depth and the weight/reps win like everything else! They obviously put it that deep thinking the deeper the better and make it harder for everyone it's just f**king pointless if you can't do a rep!
