» Sugden Barbell Goes 'Down Under' (Go to post)31-12-2006 @ 22:47
I'm not saying it's bad for anybody else's knees. Just, sadly, mine.

Yes, I was indeed collecting up my pre-Christmas-dinner pills. That's what I call f**king ironic, Alanis.

You know, I read that article, looked at the pic, and never twigged it was Joni. Clearly I don't look at him as closely, nay, longingly, as young Roberto.

This is, to be honest, getting right on my tits (which are not inconsiderable, to be fair). I can cope with being hurt after *doing something*, like, say, f**king up a deadlift, or even cycling down a hole. But leaning over slightly to pick up a vitamin pill...

Backs are bas***ds.

TBH with my back and hips still tight and sore I'm not sure I'm willing to drive miles for a crap workout Unhappy. Will probably leave it for Tuesday.

And I'm back. Christmas this year was greatly enlivened by something going rather wrong in my back on Christmas Day afternoon, as I leaned over *very slightly* to pick something up from on top of my bed. I don't know if there was an audible noise or not, but something let go for no apparent reason and left me moving less fluently even than usual for the next several days.

It's most of the way right now. I guess that unprovoked back problems means that I am now officially no longer a young man. Hey ho.

Rob - are you training anywhere on Sunday? I kind of hope I'll be up to it.

His strength does, I admit, impress me, but I agree that his training methods are a torn pec waiting to happen. Benching 180 without warmup three times a week is gonna hurt you pretty soon, surely.

And on that note, I'm orf. Merry thingy, everyone.

Sadly I couldn't get away early. In the end I just went to the Sugden and f**ked about a bit.

I actually haven't got any swimming kit, come to think of it. I don't think I've been swimming in about fifteen years. So I probably can't do three miles any more...

I probsbly float better, though.

Friday 22/12

Slightly thrown by a maniac almost killing me on my way to the gym with some particularly exceptional driving, and then thrown again by pulling up and getting out of the car to see a suspect-looking puddle underneath it. Last time I arrived at the gym to such a puddle, it cost me £800 to put right. All fluid levels seemed normal, so I went to lift and tried to forget about it. Not entirely successfully.

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 160x1, 180x1, 190xf. I should have got this, but I just lost interest part-way up. Not really focused tonight.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 70x8, 105x6x2.

Assisted chins -15x3x2.

It's not bench day, but it will be a while til I lift again, so

Bench Press 60x8, 100x1, 110x1, 120x1, 130xf. Lost the line, but the strength is definitely there.

Lots of lovely stretching. Absolutely no knee trouble at all, which is lovely.

And the Lovemobile seems fine, which is also lovely.

I suppose two narrow fails on two lifts 5kg below my PBs isn't too bad shortly after a illness layoff. And, speaking of layoffs, that's it for at least a week, since I'm away.

Rather to my surprise, the Sugden was absolutely dead tonight. There were about six other people lifting in total the whole time I was there, and most of the time there were only two or three people in the weight room and nobody at all doing cardio.

The Bench Brothers (you know who I mean) also complained of being out of sorts. Which, for the larger one, meant something like 180x1 (without any warmups, straight off the street), 160x3, 140x6, 120x10, and then the no-rest drop set of 70x20, 60x15, 50x10, 40x10, 20x20, 60x3. Madness.

It's worth remembering that I'm a crap powerlifter and a lot of that 125+kg is lard Happy. Still, yes, I hope it's very doable. I'd really like to put bodyweight overhead within the next couple of years (when my bodyweight will hopefully be a bit less than currently).

That's why I didn't claim it, mr boar. I do have *some* shame Happy.

There's piss in Joni's arms? Couldn't he afford the synthol, then?

There is part of me that's reluctant to commit to any firm goals, because my training is not the biggest priority in my life and my biggest priority in my training is enjoying it. So the ones I am putting here are both relatively conservative, and to be viewed as intentions rather than commitments. Apart from the first two. Any of the others that conflict with those will be summarily abandoned.

1) Enjoy my training, and my life. This is not optional.
2) Be free of major injury, and in significantly less knee pain than currently (the cold weather and the period of inactivity have not helped).

3) Be less fat. Dan's 110kg target looks not unreasonable, but I'm not bothered about scales. "Be not fat" is really the goal here, but I'll settle for "not the fattest of the Sugden crew" for starters.

I think that may be my big target for the year, to be honest. Though, of course, if pursuing it conflicts with goal 1, it won't be. Goal 1 is paramount.

4) Bench 140kg paused, at *least*.
5) Squat 400lbs.
6) Dead 220kg.

7) Get my wrists flexible enough to be able to catch power cleans
8) learn to power clean and push press somewhat properly
9) and take 100kg from floor to overhead.

I'd be not unhappy with 80kg, to be honest.

10) Chin for sets of at least five, comfortably.

Have I missed something, Dan? I thought you were looking to get heavier again rather than cut. Why the change?
» What music do you like? (Go to post)21-12-2006 @ 00:01
That's brilliant playing. Obviously owes a lot to Michael Hedges, but that's no bad thing. Plus he even looks sort of powerliftery, in a vaguely Westside way.

Have you heard Jon Gomm? He's British and plays two-handed in a not entirely dissimilar way, plus sings superbly. And is a lovely bloke. There's some stuff on YouTube, I think.
