Oh, that's not good to know.

Mmm, change of plan maybe...

Sounds good. What time do you fancy? I teach just down the road so can be there whenever after 3.30.

Wednesday 10th June

Push press
60kg 2*5
80kg*5
90kg*3
100kg*2
100kg*3
102.5kg*3
105kg*3

Front squat
60kg*5
100kg 2*3
140kg*1
160kg*1
175kg FAIL

Back squat
60kg*3
100kg*3
140kg*3
180kg*1
200kg*1
210kg*1
220kg*1

Apart from the push press I have no idea what the hell I was doing or why. Should have done a few 3s with 140-160 on the fronts and why I did back squats...I have no idea. Just highlights the danger of going in without a plan!

Tried to finish off with some narrowish grip bench, but my left wrist started complaining and I left it there. Went home a little disgruntled.

might do that one as well so we can be embarrassed together Grin

log - no danger of me nailing a rep

but i need to pull a rep on the deadlift, otherwise no point in going for it.

I'll speak to shawn and see if he is up for a sessin in your neck of woods at some point.

Sounds like a plan. It would be good to see some fresh faces, especially in the week. If you really want a treat, we could give the shield a try...

I'd definitely give the deadlift a go if I were you. I think it requires a slightly different approach and set up, more like a rack pull really.

As for that log, I will probably be going through the motions on competition day. On a different log I would have a chance, but not that one.

not sure if i am ready mate... pressing is still s**t, and deadlift wasnt good even last year Grin

But i am tempted. Northwich heats could still be a possibility giving me few more weeks to prepare.

Which one are you doing?

I'm going to do the Northwich Open heat in early July. I have no real chance of qualifying, but want to make an improvement on last year (I was severely outclassed - did the same heat as Shawn and several other beasts).

As ever, Mark has not held back on the weights, so the log and maybe stones will make me look stupid, but that's just because I need to get stronger.

Yes. I'm going to try and get down a couple of times a week in the afternoon (I work about 2 minutes away), so if you're planning to go down and want someone to train with, then let me know. Otherwise plenty train there on Saturday and Sunday (as I'm sure you know).

Are you going to do the opens again?

Welcome to the forum.

I saw you at the Adlington Christmas meet, we may have chatted there?? I was the guy with the beard if that's any use!

Starting a log here.

The next three weeks should have the strapline 'desperate last minute preparation for UK Strongman North which I should have started on weeks ago...'

Monday 8th June
First Events session for a while, down at Northwich on a balmy June evening.

Log
85kg 3*1 - a couple of light runs with farmers in between these to warm up
95kg*1
100kg*1
105kg*fail
Wanted to see where I was at. Up to 100kg felt smooth and quick, couldn't really get any push into 105. Got gassed surprisingly easy.

Truck tyre deadlift
220kg*1
220kg*2
240kg*1
270kg*1 - horrible, mostly back
270kg*1 - far better, pushed from the feet

Farmers' walk
110kg per hand*20m
110kg per hand*20m
130kg per hand*not very far
s**t. The handles on these are very thick. Felt good with 110 but I just lost all stability and grip with 130. Must work on these as this should be one of the few events I don't look like a t**t in.

Went home.

Christ, some quick service on here!

Some impressive lifters and some gutsy performances, especially Mark Clegg's stones. Going into the last event I was almost convinced I was going to beat him to sixth.

Oh well...

Over all, a great competition. Many thanks must go to Ben France for the smooth organisation and running.
» Log lift....this isn't bad! (Go to post)02-02-2009 @ 20:40
Kristal was an olympic lifter. He apparently failed a test, so is now doing strongman.

If Siders failed to get all the barrels, I don't think it's fair to conclude that the other guys are s**t squatters because they failed to get them. Presumably the set-up they're using is harder than the set-ups that the people on here have managed comparable weights with.

I read somewhere that Siders got his stance and set-up wrong, so it was more of a technique issue.

Thanks for the results.

Does anyone have any more pictures/video?

I'd quite like to know just how bad my deadlift opener looked. Judging by how my back felt later, it can't have been good.

I will be weighing competitors in from 9am-11am on the morning of the comp' to give them every opportunity to make weight, but if they don't make it they don't lift, unless the other competitors are in agreement they can lift but their scores will not count and they will not be placed. I can't see the point in having a weight limit if it is not strictly adhered to, but on the other hand don't mind giving someone every chance of making it. Given how much notice there is for next year's comps there really shouldn't be any excuses not to make the weight.

Cheers Ben. Makes sense.

Just wanted to clarify, as I've heard of some US comps having weigh-ins quite a few hours out, enabling a little water manipulation etc. Personally I think I'd rather do without that sort of thing, so your approach sounds good. At the end of the day, it's the same for everyone.
» U/105 comps in 2009 (Go to post)22-11-2008 @ 21:04
Out of interest, does anyone know when weigh-ins usually take place for u105 comps?

Just thinking about how much fatter I can or can't let myself get over the next couple of months.

Interested, especially if I know for definite it's going to happen, and when.
