Just a few weeks ago at the northern masters comp my coach was telling me just how fantastic a lifter Alan was in his prime. It's a sad day for the sport.

Condolences to all the lifters at Adlington and Alan's family and friends.

Very sad news, Alan was happy to help everyone and had an enormous passion for lifting. RIP.

Very sad news. I only met Alan a couple of times but his enthusiasm and passion for lifting and his lifters was a sight to behold.

RIP Alan.

I met the man twice. At the 2008 British Nationals (powerlifting) and at a weightlifting comp in Oxford. He had come down with Littler and Wigan for a meet at Oxford Powersports.

I have a lovely picture that Littler took of Alan showing me squat technique in a car park. We didn't know it was being taken, so was completely natural. It's a great photo.

RIP Alan.

Im very sad indeed, Alan was like a father figure to me I will miss him much. I first met him at a comp at Thorncross in 2006 and asked about Adlington and tried to arrange to go there. A few weeks later I went and couldnt find the place, I was walking around Adlington for an hour asking people on the street where the gym is but nobody knew. A year later Jonny Mills gave me directions and I started there, at the time I was benching 120kg and 5 years on I have benched 200kg and it was down to his coaching and him pushing me and believing in me. Thanks to him I am an international now, he is one of if not the best coach when it comes to spotting technical mistakes. He was very well respected by other coaches and cared more about coaching than anyone I have seen. He gave his time to all of the people who trained at Adlington including the people who didnt really take it seriously or compete. I have never seen him fail to improve anybody. The lifters he has produced have been very impressive and he has had many internationals in both weightlifting, Powerlifting and Bench Press.

Sad news. I am sure his spirit will live on through Adlington Barbell and its members he influenced and inspired. When I competed at the push and pull his brother was telling me about Alan's lifts and I was in awe.

I'm so sad to hear this news. I type with a tear in my eye. I got to know Alan quite well over the years I was in the north west, and we also met up on several occasions at international events, and I was an occasional guest at Adlington. I don't post nearly so much on Sugden these days, so didn't even know he was unwell. My memories are of an unassuming and modest man who was one of the greatest strength athletes this country has ever produced, and who was happy to help anyone and everyone irrespective of their lifting level.

To all the Adlington guys, it must be like losing your second dad, my thoughts are with you at this sad time. One of a kind, Alan was, one of a kind.

I was flicking through Sugden before going training. I'm on my own tonight, it's cold as hell, I was thinking of passing, but I know Alan would tell me to get my f**king arse out there and do some work, so off I go with a heavy heart and a renewed motivation.

RIP Alan.

Very sad news. I only found out last night.
I didn't know Alan as well as some of you on here but I had real admiration for the man.
I don't need to mention his achievements, we all know what Alan could do in his heyday!
He was a great coach aswell as a competitor & it was always a pleasure being around him at all the competitions.
Unfortunatly I only got to train at Adlington a few times due to injury & family commitments. But after a couple of sessions under Alan's guidance there was a marked improvement in what I could clean & put over my head.
He was really first class.
He really will be missed by everyone.
