A very swift three

So basically a five letter word with the first four provided. More luck than skill to be honest but I'll take it

A comfortable three. Usual openers and that only left one viable option that I could see.

More importantly though, it is fifteen years and one day since your first journal post on here Pete. I clicked on the first page of your journal rather than the last in error and noted the date. Fifteen years! I still had hair back then.*

* That is a complete falsehood.

Thank you for making this a fun place to be. There are not many corners of the world where tyre pressures, hatred of cheese, word problems and cunnilingus all blend seamlessly.

Could have easily been a 2, but a 3

The fourth was a long time coming, and when it came I couldn't believe that it had taken so long. It left me with three options so the fifth was tactical.

I had no hair either, in fact hadn't had for a couple of decades or so. We succeeded were others failed. Baldness is a blessing for both the bald and the manufacturers of warm hats. It has long mystified me that those who fail at baldness try to convince the successful that they (the failures) have done something clever.

Like we'd ever fall for that :-)

Noticeably less aching in the shoulder. I shall try to contain my excitement. On arrival home I noted that the odometer on the car read exactly 20,000 miles. I shall take that as a positive sign, not sure what of, but if anything springs to mind I will let you know.

Very straightforward. Not sure if this counts as a "rum" word. I'll get back to you on that. I shall await Bod's opinion with interest, he and I are generally kindred spirits in these matters and I am properly undecided

I think I'm happy with the word - It's just the version we use when referring to a male as opposed to a female isn't it?

Took me four, and considerable puzzlement at that. Macca is exactly right, it is the correct spelling for the term when applied to males.

I am aware of that.

Recently however I have noticed that when socializing with intelligent, educated people under the age of thirty five, I have become increasingly aware of them being blissfully unaware of phrases that I consider to be very common.

Two examples that spring to mind are "something for your bottom drawer" and "he knows his onions"

I would therefore be prepared to risk a small wager that there ae now a significant number of people who think "blonde" is a six letter word and are totally unaware that there is a five letter version.

By sheer coincidence I had to explain ‘Knows his onions’ to a friend (half my age) who is steeped in book learning, but had no clue what I was talking about and thought I may have been insulting him when I said ‘You know your onions.’ This happened on Sunday. I conclude that he can play the age card all he likes, but it isn’t cutting the mustard…
