» 'I was on my 8th rep of a 165kg bench press...' (Go to post)27-07-2011 @ 07:01
I liked the way that he 'naturally' finished the set.

The comments underneath are good, there's one saying he roomed with this chap, and how it's great he can lift 165kg now, because he couldn't lift a finger back then.

It's not nice. Unless you were very strict about rest doing 1, 2 is worse, by the time you're puffed, those three exercises are taking about 40s to do, giving you a 2:1 work to rest ratio, which starts getting unpleasant.

Been trying to develop a few more of those 77 areas of fitness. Wink So I have been doing some crossfit inspired stuff.

Few things I've been doing:

1. kneeling hands on bar, leap to feet, high pull back to kneeling x5
hands on barbell press-up x10
sprawl deadlift x5 (squat thrust between reps, hands on bar)
bent-over row x5

No rest between exercises. For multiple rounds

2. Modified 'Chelsea'
On the minute, every minute BoR x5, press-up x10, bw squat x15

3. Kneeling hands on bar, leap to feet, high pull superset with dips - 21-15-9 for time

4. 6x6 barbell complex of Clean, Press, RDL, BOR, High-pull. Short rest.

Hey Buzz, don't know if I've ever posted in this thread. Ordered a load of stuff from you back in February - weightlifting package, dip belt, some assorted iron plates - really pleased with all of it.

Will definitely be thinking about getting a grappler/landmine, actually had a look at the site the other day to see if you had one.

There's the effects on your health, your longevity to take into account.

I have a fairly crap set of lungs. At 5'7" the strongest I've been was when I weighed 89kg (just about obese, with a 34" waist), but I was also having problems with big hills and several flights of stairs. Dropped to 80kg, and felt a lot better.

To return to earlier discussions about BMI - it has a limited value when dealing with people that don't train. The problem is this exception has made it into public awareness, and now everyone thinks that 10 mins on the bike for legs, and some bicep curls, invalidates their doctor's concerns about their morbidly obese BMI.

Joseph - re-reading the article it does imply it took it up recently, but another reading could be that he only got top level coaching in the last year or so.

Terry - there probably are the odd one or two players of that raw physical ability playing rugby, but maximal strength will be impacted by needing to be able to keep up with the game. There's a chap called Sam Herrington who was with Gloucester, he had a few u23 discus titles, but has dropped down to Dudley and back up Coventry according to rugbystats and is part time (like all of Coventry I think) He's still young though, might come back up.

Thanks to whoever embedded the video, forgot that you can do that here.

"Temptation of rugby" eh? In a way, as long as he has hands and wasn't aimlessly shoved on the wing, I'd like to see him back to rugby after the Olympics. He might be best at wing, but the days of Lomu running over Catt have gone, instead I'd prefer him at lock or 8. Him and Courtney Lawes would be a big, properly athletic, locking partnership. He could be given license to seagull a bit at times.

There are probably more than a few lads who never make it as pro's who dominated age grade because they were physical freaks. Should be identifying them for track and field etc.

Just read about this chap. 19 years old, took up discus last year because he fancied having a crack at getting into the Olympics. Played on the wing in the Daily Mail schools rugby final last year, his old school are funding him this year to train as a full time athlete.

He says his technique isn't great, but he's recently thrown 67.63m, which is one of the better throws this year apparently.

Anyway, he's 6'6", 20st 5lb and claims to run the 100m in 11sec. - that's him benching 170x3 pretty comfortably
» Mr Untrained Average (Go to post)13-07-2011 @ 23:14
I've seen two chaps who are naturally fairly strong looking have a crack at weights for the first time. One managed to put 50kg over his head, and nearly killed himself and his brother in the process. The other just about managed 40kg.

Generally when I see 17-18 year olds in the gym for the first time, benching (it's always benching), the problem is not having any sort of form or 'groove'. 30kg goes up ok, but deviating from a decent bar path by about 6" at a time. 35 barely gets off the chest, because it's drifted so far in one direction.

Squatting is just hilarious usually. The only person I've ever seen squat really well the first time was my brother's girlfriend - bloody natural. Of course, she's into endurance sports and doesn't want to lift weights.
» One arm (mostly) out of action (Go to post)22-06-2011 @ 22:36
I've got a long line, and I train at home so limited on equipment but not so bad on the germs front.

Think I'll do a fairly basic routine -

light "zombie" front squats
light, high rep RDLs
One arm DB OHP
One arm DB snatch

3x a week, and spend 3 sessions a week on the turbo trainer.
» One arm (mostly) out of action (Go to post)22-06-2011 @ 16:38
I've got an IV line in for the next two weeks, doctor reckons it'll be ok for holding on to a barbell, so RDLs etc will be ok. He probably wasn't thinking of anything that might be considered a respectable load though, so will keep it reasonably light. Can't flex that elbow properly, so barbell presses etc are out.

There is the theory that continuing to train the other arm will help prevent strength loss/deconditioning in the untrained arm. Anyone got any experience? Have to say, I'm dubious - I'm a rightie and my left forearm has been smaller than my right since I was 12.

Straight up, who would fire that.

New Year's Eve celebrations, fairly common in parts of the US I believe, let off a few rounds.

http://www.snipercentral.com/308.htm

G3 (they're on the G36 now aren't they?) fires the .308 NATO round. In terms of aimed fire it's max effective range is 800-1000m, but that's a lot to do with bullet drop (somewhere in the order of 140inches at 800m) and wind drift at that sort of range. Fired at 45 degrees by the time it hits the ground it's going to have lost a massive amount of energy, 2265ft/lbs at 100yds down to 635ft/lbs by 824m according to the link. Even by it's max possible range it's still going to have a lot more energy than a bullet that is falling to earth after being fired vertically.
