This is taken from the IPF website, I can see what they're trying to do but if there was a misunderstanding about the running order in a contest which meant you were on next I'd appreciate the full minute to get my belt or wrist wraps on.

PROPOSAL TO CONGRESS
Only the one suggested change to the Technical Rules as such ( from the Executive Committee ) is that concerning the time allowed for lifters from the calling

of their names, to attempts made in the Bench Press and Deadlift.

- - - - - - Any further adjustments to the racks must be made within the lifters time allowance, unless the lifter has nominated his rack height and this has been incorrectly set by the spotter/loaders. It is therefore essential that the rack height sheet be signed or initialled by the lifter or coach. This is an official document which should verify in any dispute. The lifter is allowed one minute in the squat, 45 seconds in the bench press and 30 seconds in the deadlift, in which to start his attempt after the speaker calls the lifter to the bar.

This perhaps could be considered as some "compensation" in respect of the twenty minutes intermission given between squat and bench press when single groups are competing.

Should this proposal receive the votes required it will not change the extra three minutes to be added when lifters follow themselves, as in (i) of the Round System.
REASON
It is reasonable to assume that one minute is not necessary in which to begin attempts in bench press and deadlift. A speedier process will cut down contest time.

What do you think???

I think one minute is fine. I am sure when lifting equipped that time could be needed. I don't see much benefit of dropping 15s from each lift? What would most meets save?

Time at meets is mostly saved by efficient running, ie reducing delays between flights, loading etc.

a lot of meets are not strict on the 1min rule anyway, seems like putting go-faster stripes on fiesta

How do you know? Have you been checking out the MC with a stopwatch? What was the average over time you recorded? Were particular lifters being favoured? Were officials being intimidated by gigantic, slow moving supers? Spill the beans, Paul! I'm guessing it was only local meets, btw?Grin

It's Johnny Nash time - more questions than answers! That's what us Max Clifford types do! BWLA or BDFPA? One-off or repeated?

Once, when MCing, I gave a newish lifter a few seconds leeway in a local comp, then told his coach what I'd done and said I wouldn't do it again. Good officiating, imo - but then I would think that, wouldn't I? But you wouldn't get that at nationals or above, where a clock is normally shown on the screen.

Im sure you will all be pleased to hear the IPF EC has withdrawn the proposal to shorten the time in Bench Press and Deadlift.
Thank god!
