Is it alright to wear a belt on these if you are doing them as deadlift assistance and not for olympic pull assistance?

I have been doing them beltless so far but when they get heavier am I best trying to replicate my normal deadlift as much as possible, of which wearing a belt is certainly part of my rythm now?

Cool, one more question if I may guys. If one is deadlifting in another session on the same week, any thoughts as to how heavy one should go on the clean pulls. Bearing in mind for me the deadlifts are a lot more important.

Looks like you're not doing the third pull. Don't lean backwards mate. Think of it as a jump, you want to be perpendicular to the floor while bringing the bar as high as possible. I can't see a difference in the speed below and above the knees. First pull, off the floor is a deadlift, slow, the bar takes off. Once you've passed the knees accelerate. Then the bar should be at hips level. Thats where you want to use the speed and shrug the bar while being on the tip of the toes getting the bar even higher again, every inches count, then drop for a clean.

Maybe it's a bit too heavy to give it enough speed,i dont know, i cant read how much is on there. The bar is touching your legs and thats good, shoulders are above the bar and back is flat.

You're doing pretty good mate.

Looks very like a deadlift but with a shagging motion at the top...

What is a clean pull anyway, like a clean but not all the way?

Cheers for that mate. It's 105 kilos. So are you saying I should be thinking of taking the bar up rather than trying to use my hips to send it up and forwards, which is what is making me lean back I think.. I can see what you mean about me not shrugging it.

One more thing, if I always deadlift fast off the bottom then is it not OK to do it on these as I'm doing them as assistance for the deadlift, or does the same principle apply even if you're not doing them for oly lifts?

If you're doing clean pulls do clean pulls. That means slow(ish) off the floor, then pushing the hips through explosively and shrugging explosively at the end (which, as mishima says, you're not doing).

If you're doing them as deadlift assistance then presumably it's the second pull you're most interested in, for explosive lockout power. The first pull of the clean pull sets you up in the right position for this second pull, and to do that properly you should be pulling slow and controlled off the floor to just above the knees.

I'm sure Andy can put you right on these at Adlington.

Ok here's tonights efforts... slow mo video so you can analyze it better

http://www.sugdenbarbell.co.uk/uploads/1191446399.wmv

I think I've rectified the slow start / fast over the knees part of the pull - but I'm really confused where to take the bar. And should it be hips and shrug at the same time, or is there an order? I didn't feel like I was taking the bar high enough especially as it was only 50kg.

Answers on a postcard please!!

Are those footy socks or something special? Also are those squat shoes or deadlifting 'slippers'? The reason I ask is because I was told I could/should use my squat shoes for deadlift type exercises too, is that the received wisdom? For example, I am wondering whether I should power clean in my flat soled converse style shoes or my squat shoes?

Sorry I can't help on your technique!
