1st deadlifting for about a year and 1st time doing sumo's. Matched previous PB then upped it 5kg and previous was with straps and these were without. I have been heavy rackpulling for the last 12 months only.

you ever thought of deadlifting in flat shoes with a thin sole? It reduces the range of motion leading to heavier weights.

They were just the shoes I have on after box squatting....not much thought went into it to be honest....just kind of happened! Will keep it in mind from now on though!

Looking strong

Could do with sitting into it a bit more and using more legs

Those look great for a first go Tatty Head!

With sumo, it can be a good idea to get the hips in and keep the chest up. It is much closer to a squat than a conventional deadlift. Not everyone sumos like that, but I found it helpful.

Matt Ladewski is a good example of this style. See video (angle not ideal for seeing hip movement but you can see how upright his chest is):

And of course Ed Coan. There's a good example at 1:21 in this video showing how far his hips are in:

That's good advice and maybe easier to do if you leave the ironworks on rather than a flat slipper, as an elevated heel usually makes it easier to get deeper and a flat sole usually raises the hips.

On the penultimate lift (I exclude the last one as it was a pb and they are seldom pretty but it happens there too) you will notice that as you start the lift your hips come up while your shoulders stay still, the means that the angle of your back becomes more acute at the commencement of the lift, this is not a good thing. Whatever angle your back is at just at the very start, should be as acute as it gets, it should only ever get less acute than that. In effect, you are adopting your ideal start position and then changing it right at the moment the bar comes off the floor.

Personally I find sumo difficult but if you can get your femurs out to the side somewhat rather than forwards that must be a good thing :-)

Nice deadlifting - ideally you should have your chest up more and not let your hips rise so quickly, but no all lifters can manage it - my "Mrs" deadlifts in a fairly similar manner with her hips coming up too much, but it hasn't stopped her pulling over 3x bodyweight. A lack of leg strength can also cause your hips to come up automatically to allow you to use you back more to pull the weight.

Not sure about the shoes Pete - many of the USA women used to do sumo with flat heels and raised toes (I don't think the IPF accept this anymore) to encourage the lifter to sit up more. It certainly made Marian sit more upright when she tried it.

It's not very clear, but Priscilla definitely uses raised toes in her shoes

Some excellent and much appreciated pointers to steer me in the right direction. Things can only improve from here on in as far as I can see it, many of the points made I had already picked up on when watching the vids back so it's nice to have them confirmed. In all honesty I actually had not expected to go over 100kg but it just felt good so we just kept going. Hip flexibility and strengthening in the right areas with suitable training should eek out most of these problems.

Thanks again chaps!
