Many thanks to you all for raising money for such a good cause.

Any vids of the Welshies?

High platforms mate and I'd have been worried had Ant Griffiths not got them up there just fine considering he was one of the shortest competing that day. Vids may surface but they'll be from competitors/competitor's families.

Sorry for not posting last night but after no food from 6:00 in the morning I wasn't in a good place by 10:00 last night when I ran a bath.

Congratulations to all the lads competing as it was a long hard day. A hard fought 105 comp with some fantastic feats of strength by all the lads. Ant Griffiths was on excellent form and deserved the win. It was a real battle for second and third places with Si Thomas, Andy Gozwell and Owen Lewis fighting until the bitter end. The novice category brought to light some real talent and with some blistering times on the moving events, it was an exciting comp to say the least.

Many thanks to Alex Gibby for making the comp what it was, Ross Stone and Hywel Thomas for their hard work on the day and much appreciation goes to Kelvin Gardener, Emil (Project Goliath) and Stuart Flynn for helping out through the day when they had only come to watch.

In all seriousness, we will need more Welsh competitors who don't fall into one of the comp categories and don't live a long way away helping out on the day as it will mean the comps will be quicker and ran more efficiently and it won't mean that just three people have to empty a venue full of kit after 10 hours there. The sport of strongman in Wales isn't as well populated as it is in England but it does mean that we need to pull together in order to develop the sport in this country and make it as successful as it could be.

Full results for both categories will posted up this week for all to see.

Congratulations to all concerned again and thanks for everyone's support

Comp update....

Unless all competitors agree to the contrary, the OH medley will be one at a time as we are not able to obtain two IFSA spec matching logs.

The more the merrier mate. There can never be enough people shifting kit in between events.

BigT said:Its very similar weights to ESM 2011; our frame carry was 400kg though.

That doesn't sound like the most callous friendly event!!! Based on the frame at the UKs over many years and the one used in Ireland at the recent Irish/Welsh Giants Live qualifier, the weight at the Welsh may be dropped slightly as we don't want it to be a case of only 2 out of 10 that can shift it!

Well i suppose there is only one way of finding out... and that's put it on and see what happens. I just hope people prepare themselves for this as we know what some people are like.. and that's when injuries occur.
I hope is does bring out the best in people. There are some strong guys in Wales, no doubt about that. It tends to be their attitude that lets them down, maybe throwing themselves in the deep end is what's needed.
I certianly won't be competing this year but maybe if I can get back to some good strength I'll have a go next year... the open title still vaids me!!! Grin

It'll be a very hard comp, there's no getting away from that but the weights aren't too dissimilar to the UKs, National finals or regional qualifiers. It will certainly find out who is the strongest man in Wales this year!!!

Be great to have you competing again next year Martin and the Welsh Strongman scene is moving in a very positive direction.

Martin_Jones said:Well with the events becoming this heavy on every event I doubt very much I will make a return to the Welsh next year... I'm getting to old for this now Unhappy

Should be interesting to see who competes. The weight will probably scare any new comers away. I think anyone over 22st will be competitive and have a shout at winning.

I suppose it's the way forward but might be a little to big of a step at the moment.

Hi Martin,

Two of the events are subject to testing - van deadlift and frame carry - based on a cross section of competitors. Yoke, Axle and Stones will remain as stated and truck pull (last years UKs set up) will be weighted so it's extremely hard but unlike the UKs, we don't want just 1 or 2 competitors able to move it at all!

The Welsh Open need to become a heavy comp in order to be comparable with other national qualifiers. It is going to be a hard step for lads coming from Intermediate/Light Open level but it's necessary we thi k in order to raise the standard sufficiently. There's a busy calendar of comps planned in Wales next year thanks to Alex Gibby's involvement in the sport so there will more opportunities to get fresh blood moving up to the big league.
