Several lifters from the NW lifted at the SY open on saturday. It was a day of good pulling for most.
Leah Greene returned from injury and finished on a PB of 87.5 kg in the 67.5 class
Valerie Ritchie in the 82.5s went 142.5 - 90 - 167.5 to make her first 400 total - big Val has done around 4 workouts since the British open Champs. Imagine what she would do if she was training seriously.
Big Mick Ashurst narrowly missed a 350 DL due to some hand problems - it left him with a best of 340 to make a total of 895. He squatted 360 for his third, but it really looked like an opener. Mick should be consistently in the 900s next year.
Ian Shaw struggled on the squat, only getting one passed, but despite this he finished on 730. It could have been more, but his last DL with 315 was failed due to a slip up in technique - the power was certainly sufficient.
Other highlights included Marie Thornton with a 255 squat and 580 total, as well as a new guy (sorry don't know his name) benching 215 raw.

Mick seems to have really been improving his lifting.
What single factor has caused this do you think Jim?

I think the "new guy" was Chris Baker. He's been lifting in BDFPA recently and lifts raw only. Really, really strong bencher.Greater lifting by Marie. If Mick gets his bench anywhere near the standard of his other two lifts he'd be 1000+ evey time. And how good a deadlifter is Ian? He'd be respectably in the supers with a 300+ pull. Well done.

I think that the reason for Mick's improvement is largely due to sticking with it and slowly getting better. He is still young, for a powerlifter, and should make good progress for a few years. 1000+ certainly is not out of the question for him in the future.

I think mick is about 31-32 He has consistantly improved year by year as Martin said he just needs to bring his bench along inline with the other two lifts. He's an all round nice bloke too.
There were some talented lifters there, It was Chris Baker with a 740kg toal at 129kg bodyweight. Very impressive.

Mick and Ian are now training with Pork Pie, living legend. I can report that both are good boys, and will do bigger and better in 2008.

Do you train at Catts then PP? I think Ian registered here a while back but he never got his confirmation email - could you tell him I enabled the account? Cheers and welcome to the forum.
