It's a funny one really.People with plenty of flesh dont need a belt so much but people in good nick struggle to continental clean without one. I actually find it's agood measure of when I'm getting too fat. When I got a decent power belly on me a while back I found I could even get the second 'hitch' up towards my chest. As soon as I lost weight I couldn't do it anymore.

Basically IMO your creating a disadvantage for people with lower bodyfat levels.

Thats my experience of it anyway. Not sure if thats of any helpConfused

Edit if that reads like I'm trying to suggest I'm in good nick it's not supposed tooRoll-Eyes

Having said that, a lot of guys use a technique where they rest it on the top of their abdomen and lean back, then when they dip they let it slide and touch the belt and essentially go off that, and that strictly speaking is legal with "no belt cleans" as it only touches for the slightest split second.

I used to think no belt cleans penalized thin guys, but then terry hollands said that cleaning on the belt takes the grip element out of it, and I think he might be right

I've watched a 75kg dude with a 26 inch waste cont clean over 100kg with no belt

In my opinion strongman should be about moving an object from A to B any way possible.

The older SM comps i have watched had very few rules and athletes were deemed "clever" when they used their belt for a clean. I even remember Kaz "skillfully" tying a rope to his belt for a sled drag. Thats why many enjoy SM comps as the lack of rules allow for a greater variety in techniques (prime example hitching Deadlifts)

On the other hand the belt is not part of the human body so resting a bar on it can be seen as performance enhancing (but since when has performance enhancing been banned from SM Wink)

RE: giving fatties and advantage. Do we give the fatties a head start on moving events or smaller stone diameters for the gut bearing athletes. No. Some events favor the more rotund chap and some the leaner chap. Maybe the leaner chap should find a new way of cleaning the bar... oh wait a belt clean Grin

All in all its up to the comp promoter/ref. I say allow it.

For the record i'll be emplaying a non-belt continental clean (unless i get tired then anything goes) Grin

Not mastered the art of it yet. Can't see too much of a problem really. Like someone else said, A to B, any means possible.

What is s**t is when promoters say "belt cleans allowed", so lads go out and buy a belt, then rules get changed

this also happens with straps i heard

I'm all for them as my power clean is 30kg lower than my clean and press with a belt clean, I think strongman means move heavy s**t by any means possible! Snatch, power clean, belt clean, anything goes, I think if you restrict the athletes it limits the weight in my opinion.

i do 'belt cleans' when im doing heavy over heads, i was training for a comp a few years back and as my over head is pretty weak i was doing 100kg belt cleans and some guy come up to me saying that those lifts wont count in competition, this guy had never competed before so i told him to f**k off and i kept doing it
