If you import goods from outside the EU there is a chance that you will be charged import VAT by HMRC. If you buy goods from another EU country you should not get any charges by HMRC. However, you should be charged VAT by the vendor if they are VAT registered.

Depending on the country the supplier is selling from I think VAT can be as high as 25% in Europe. Of course if the supplier does regular business in UK then they may already be VAT registered over here.

Buying from overseas is a gamble when it comes to customs charges.

In my experience, it depends on how much information the seller declares about the goods and which shipping company they use.

Many moons ago I ordered from bodybuilding.com, an order around £100 turned up within 3 days and there were no customs charges.

A subsequent order for around £60 took over 3 weeks to reach me and a month later I received an invoice from the courier (UPS i think) demanding import tax + administration fees, amounting to about £18.

I was fooked off to say the least Angry
