» help - where can i buy this old school hand grip machine - plate loaded? (Go to post)16-12-2013 @ 14:01
Thanks for the replies - unbelievably bruce lee apparantly invented this machine - didn't know that ! iron hand grip machine it's called in kung fu circles.

I am doing some rehab on my forearms/fingers/hand at the moment and went for a work out the other week and touchwood ok - been told no pressing etc. and managed to use this device which seemed to give me a good stretch after doing chest/shoulders

So making use of it at home in spare time with a gyro ball and another contraption until i feel 100%.

Working shoulders/chest out without doing any pressing movements is a pain but thankfully can do a bit on pec dec machines and cable cross overs.

Thanks everyone.

The pool also splits in 2 (when needed - 2 x 25m) and is chlorine free - they use something else i think! Happy

The only thing that pisses me off with the place apart from some pieces of equipment missing - idiots on the platforms time wasting messing about with the power racks not doing "real" training...

There are alot of average joes in the gym with a few hardcore trainers and a high level rugby train there as it's that good (they travel 25 miles each way to train there)

but the average joe doesn't know how lucky they are to have that gym/complex

Point taken - in strong man u can push press..

and you can hitch on the deadlift so long as it goes up...

So yes understand push press will ultimately allow you to press more.. but i was just thinking about pure shoulder strength...

The poster says they wear the same shoes they squat in - agree with that too.

Zero cushioning shoes with good grip are good like astro turf trainers or wrestling boots.

Good luck with it m8.

maybe lease the gym equipment at first?

Or buy the equipment second hand.

Bare minimum in my opinion : -

2 power racks and 2 x chest press racks ... These are always busy in all gyms... and not too expensive to buy.

I train in 2 gyms (1 pay as u go the other membership),

1 is amazing and alot of money has been spent on it(the whole complex was .... £35 million !! and is the bollox - 50 metre indoor swimming pool, football pitches etc) with hammer strength kit galore..

But it doesn't have normal fixed chest press benches, or hammer strength shoulder press or hammer strength pec dec (use this for isolating my rear delts)- so i travel elsewhere for that.

However they do have 10 x hammerstrength power racks with hammerstrength platforms..

The best gyms I've trained in tend to have "core" equipment , and very heavy dumbells

If you have a good gym people will travel/pay - but also it can be "seasonal" for the average joe - getting fit after xmas and getting fit for summer hols.

I am english.. but

http://www.drinksupermarket.com/guinness-nigerian-foreign-extr...

This stuff is less gassy, twice the strength, tastes better and gets me pissed quicker whilst having a good iron content !

Most nigerian drink this.. it is the real deal/not a wind up..

Hi

My bench has never been good vs my other strengths but my shoulder press (military press) has always been good for some reason i.m.o..

At one point I could probably shoulder press as much as I could bench and my bench is rubbish...

My shoulder routine at my peak was at 95kgs bodyweight

seated Military press - not push press or not smith machine - personal best 125kgs x 5 reps

Hammer strength seated shoulder press (160kgs 4 x 20kgss up either side) x 12 reps
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ3TLhpLdkY - this is the piece of equipment - not me)

Front delt raises
Side delt raises
Rear fly rear delts.

I know people change their routine's etc. etc and we all have our strengths and weaknesses but this routine has served me well.

I would alternate each week by standing military press out of a power rack and seated military press - push press i never do - don't see the point - if your training shoulders use them - don't cheat - u either press it out or not.

I also never use smith machines as I believe it's cheating..

Hope your shoulders get stronger, and I always splitted chest/shoulders with a big rest gap between days.

P.S someone mentioned traps training prior to my post - although i deadlift, my only other trap work is upright rows heavy = never liked shrugs for some reason ..

http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competition/Breitbart/breitbart-in... - Zishe Breitbart - joukha was playing this character who a real life kind of strongman ..

unit94, give yourself a cardio target anything cycling, swimming, running whatever..

my aim is to do another 10k road race in 50 mins which I've done a few times in my life with 6 weeks worth of solid training.

5 years ago and 2 stone lighter - 15 stone I last did this feat, which for me being a "lump" I was well chuffed with.

I think at the moment i would probably struggle to do it in under an hour to be honest/maybe even complete it.

but... like lifting heavy (once you've hit a certain weight deadlifting for example) i think alot of it is in the mind and if you've done something before you can set your mind to it and do it again or get close/or even better !

I am being absolutely beasted at the moment at boot camp, swimming etc. - very very hard work but i know deep down i've got to do it.

I have massive respective for strongmen and powerlifters etc. and maybe 1 day when i get my weight back down I can maybe try and enter a novice 105kg competition.

I was going to make a proper go at novice strongman under 105kgs class was in shape and would of done "ok"... then got married then training petered out.. then got injured... now balloned up a bit to 110kgs at 5ft 10 ins and my best weight is 95/100kgs...

Seen doctor recently and my blood pressure is up to be a concerned but meds not required, even though i eat fairly well, don't drink or smoke etc. etc. and play football and 38 ..

So for now my "heavy" weights are on the back burner, diet is being cleaned even further up, and cardio I am nailing - boot camp, circuits, swimming football cycling some of which i was already doing but now cardio is taking precedence over weights, even taken my mountain bike to work so i can cycle on lunch..

Had some e/n/t problems aswell recently (ear nose and throat) and without boring everyone on here seen 4 different gps, 3 lots of antibiotics, 2 lots of prescribed steroids all over the last 3/4months..

Got very very frustrated as wasn't getting better so went private drove 100 miles away to see a specialist and he explained "what was going on" told me to bin all my medication bar 1 thing that should clear up my throat problem - reflux - excess acid in the stomach, reasssured me my sinuses were fine and told me current state of play with my ears....

Also told me that I was was overstressed from being wound up from all different gps and drugs that hadn't been effective/wrongly prescribed.

A week later I am feeling better, not as stressed, know what is wrong, and 2 out 3 things are better - had to pay £200 to see him but got answer to my questions over an hour and a half, he said normally under the nhs I would only of had 7 mins of his time. - 2 months of hell with gps, vs £200 private expert opinon for correct piece of mind and answers ! - money well spent - and my g.p couldn't even find me anywhere to go private

So now I am looking after myself better, concentrating on getting fitter and hopefully getting my throat/reflux issue sorted.

In summary, I believe that you should take your sports as far as you can whatever sport it is hit your peak and quit gracefully when you have achieved all you can..

In my opinion now fitness is more important than strength.

I have a wife and stepson to be responsible for, and I think it's best to have a mixture of strength and fitness... what's the point in being super strong etc. but you can't run for a bus if you need too (no sarcastic comments please !)

Life is what fate has for you, a friend of my dads was a superfit runner, martial artist, didn't drink didn't smoke 110% healthy died unexpectdly in his 50's - his time was up...

Live life for today, but don't burn yourself out.

go to a temping agency and offer to do anything... - good c.v, be smart (suited and booted)

sometimes the time wasted waiting for the right paying job/preferable job is not worth the wait - bird in hand.

before i settled into my normal day job, i did temp work, data entry (met my then long term girlfriend from doing that !), labouring, credit control, p.a, greenkeeping...

I can however type quite fast (60-70 wpm) so that was a skill in itself which helped me pick up data entry work/p.a work too.

Labouring you are getting paid to keep fit..

There is always something for someone if you put yourself about, make sure use a p46 form if you've not got a tax code and make sure you don't get stung with emergency tax.

I respect and understand people who go to university, but ... if you were any employer ask yourself this question - take someone with 3 years experience or take someone with a degree??? - i respect anyone who goes to uni but with the amount of debt people rack up nowadays is horrendous...

Moving on degree's are a pre-req on some jobs but i never got one - but did 3 years at college and then got out into the real world and worked, worked and worked.

I don't know everything but hey it's my opinion.

I would when i choose my career path, have a 2nd trade to fall back on too.

If i had to start over i would choose to be an electrician, plumber or painter/decorator - 3 trades that will ALWAYS be in demand and can command good wages - - i have worked in i.t for 20 years.

Good luck !Happy

Due to being on the road every day in my job, trying to get round the m25 is a mission, and the a3 can be a b**ch too.

Physique warehouse IS the best gym closest to kingston for "hardcore" workouts..

If you want to try somewhere else close to kingston pinks gym carshalton

http://www.pinksgym.com/ = carshalton, not far from kingston, but getting through sutton can be a mission - but again a PROPER gym and you can do pay as you go

Further a field if you are on the road and want to "mix it up" - maximums slough (the new one)

https://www.facebook.com/MaximumsMuscleGym/info?ref=stream - can't find their website - again hardcore gym £4 pay as you go.

If you want to workout where the london harlequins train and right on the a3 a quick drive from kingston - guildford sports park - 8 hammer strength power racks for bench/squat/deadlift - platforms - membership only - no pay as you go.

http://www.surreysportspark.co.uk/ = guildford

I do ALOT of driving during the week and train in 2 different gyms...

Physique Warehouse also does a great deal of 5 visits for £25. or a months membership for £40/50, 1st visit free - I don't work there/have no ties, I just know my gyms !!!

Lived round this area for years and hate driving far/getting stuck in traffic when trying to workout.

Good luck wherever you land up.

» World's strongest footballer (Go to post)26-06-2013 @ 22:28
I once used to play with a semi pro footballer who was amazing - that good - and dare I say it - he had skill to grace the premiership..

5ft 8 ins - 18 stone (from the age of 16-24) naturally a brick 5hit house built didn't work out, huge shoulders, huge legs etc. etc. not slow, but not quick either, - had an amazing football brain, could play with either foot and was almost impossible to get the ball off due to his size/skill (could hold the ball up forever) great touch etc. etc.

But.... he always got overlooked by "scouts" due to his size but did play semi pro until about the age of 24, he also to my knowledge had a trial with Reading too (this was over ten years ago before there premier league status ).

His football career never really took off and he went off to america as a football coach and I think is now still doing (this (10 years later) - a waste of talent imo.

People should never judge a book by it's cover, skill, play making ability and strength can offset speed imo...

Me - i play 5/6 a side once a week and use my strength and speed but I have zero skill.

On a side note - football is also at grass roots full of nepotism... but that's another story !
