After the british juniors i'll start some proper hamstring work again and see if I can push them on any further.

My lower back has been feeling really good so last night I got it into my head that I'd be doing some heavy 18" deadlift today. Unless anyone convinces me within the next hour that I'm being a stupid overtraining dick, I will be doing them.

Joseph_Walton said: That'd be a hell of an improvement, i remember reading an article about how hamstring strength improved the yank sprinters times massively, hopefully the stifflegs work for you. I'm hoping to get back into throwing but i can get away with powerlifting at the same time. Also if you start sprinting it'll stop you from catching up with me, so get sprinting. Would be grateful if you happened to find a link to that article! I read hamstring strength has a direct correlation with sprint top speed, which was my weakness last year so fingers crossed! Which utensil did you throw?

Joseph_Walton said:10.53, not taking the piss but that wouldn't get you a place on the worlds team in sprinting would it. I know that akreety fella is sub 10.1 is faster than that and don't they generally take about one person at the max. You'd definitely get on the worlds team for powerlifting, and it'd be nice to see someone kick some roided up russian arse. Exactly, I'd need an amazing season to come close to getting selected, but people keep telling me they're more impressed with that time than powerlifting on a strength training forum for some reason lol.

moz said: funding lol? Least of my worries, you'll have to stump up your own cash in powerlifting mate. Maybe the pay for juniors, I doubt it. lol don't get me wrong, I don't expect any of that in powerlifting, but I genuinely thought I deserved it in athletics based on people not performing as well as me getting funding. Generally, a lot more people get funding than get selected for world championships in athletics. But yeah I fully expect to have to pay for myself in powerlifting...

JC said:Mate I love the iron game, but my advice, dont do anything (comp wise) that would jepordise your athletics season 10.53 is fast as f**k, especially as the best Brits are only running low 10s to win Nationals/Qualify for Internationals Cheers, I'm going to try my best to balance the two as well as I can. I've just got the British Juniors in a few weeks, then that's probably it for me until the World Juniors if I make it. Main focus sprinting is the European Trials on the 27th June, if I have an amazing season then it'll be 28th July European Championships. Then IPF World Juniors are 28th August. So it looks like it'll be no problem at all fitting both sports in at an elite level (if I'm capable)

dazzachap said:Hi Tom, I'm a fairly recent member of this site, and thought it was about time i stuck my tuppence worth in from time to time, have read your log with interest, not sure if anyone has ever mentioned before in your track and field circles......? but you would be a perfect candidate for bobsledding.......requirement for both power and speed are huge. I was lucky enough to compete for 4 yrs and found it a great X-over sport for both my sprinting and lifting, both complementing each other without detracting from each other....... Barring injury (running flat out on ice with ice spikes with a recurring stressfracture not recommended)and the ability to load into the sled at full speed.... i would have been surprised taking into account your current numbers on the track and in the gym if you wouldnt have made the British team for the coming olympics in Vancouver had you been around at the start of the season..... trained with quite a few over the years who crossed over from track and field to bob with great success, Ally Condon has had a good couple of yrs and should be vancouver bound.......!? Food for thought for the future......... Thanks for the heads up, it's something to consider in the future if things aren't going to plan in other sports. I think Dan Money got into this with Allyn too? I trained with him a few times and then they both disappeared and I heard that was the direction they'd gone in!

If it's at the end of august then it's likely to be well out of the way of any important track meets (unless I get picked for worlds in that, but i doubt it...) so that's promising. Looking at past results from British Juniors it's looking good for me, but you never know when some freak will come along and go 200/100/450 or something...

Thanks! I don't really know the qualifying criteria for any of those competitions, and I don't know what I'll be up agains at the British Juniors. I do plan on sprinting this summer, but I am entertaining ideas of doing both if the opportunity is there. It would be a shame to miss a world championships, but it will be difficult for me to prioritise one sport over the other.
