» Its bloody early... (Go to post)06-12-2010 @ 11:33
Doubt that it is very good for the spine unless you are up and moving for some time beforehand. Trained at 7 a.m. for a week when I was on jury duty 20 years ago - not too bad in the summer, but I imagine that winter would have been harder. Evening weight training suits my body much better. Quite happy to run first thing in the morning, however.

Honourable mentions for Nekromantik and Cannibal Ferox beside Cannibal Holocaust.

Watched a lot of horror back in the 80s.

If you ever get the chance, see Natas: the Reflection. This is horrific for other reasons. Yes, it does take them a whole film to figure out the anagram carefully hidden in 'Natas'

Unhappy

Such clarity... I wonder how the medical discussion of this goes:

Patient: Doc, doc, what's wrong with my knee?
Sage doctor: It's what we call 'knee-structure-f**kage'. Please go the the back of the waiting list.

I've twice had calcification of the vastus medialis 'diagnosed' as a broken kneecap, so don't have too much faith...

Specialist Says...Possible Ligament Damage, Possible Cartligde f**ked, Possible Patella Tenden Ruptured!

What about knee cancer? This 'specialist' needs to specialise his diagnosis a little more! MRI would be a first port of call - strange that results are so slow!!! Arthroscopy probably advisable for differential diagnosis.

In terms of treatments, I'd try Brian's DMSO. There are drawbacks, but it's one of the best topicals that you could try. Might help the swelling. Analgesics can be added, e.g. by applying a topical anti-inflammatory (e.g. Movelat, Voltaren - both of which might be worth trying on their own anyway) and then DMSO to improve penetration (yes, DMSO is to be feared for carrying 'stuff' through the skin - so act at own risk). I'm assuming that you've been doing ice massage since the injury.

For sleeping, try to get something with codeine in it. Prescription-strength Kapake (beg scrip from doctor) will kill a lot of pain and will put an elephant to sleep. Ibuprofen will do as good as nothing, the principal reason (IMHO) for it being recommended that it irritates the gut less than other NSAIDs! The problme is that you will escalate doses (in vain) to try to achieve some effect, and thus over-ride its supposed virtue.

NB: Not the advice of a medical professional, so follow at own risk.

Not a chance on this earth. I'm only light and not bad at normal chins, but it's a completely different movement - one for which you would have to train. Having any kind of muscle on legs would be a real disadvantage. Rock climbers would be in the best place to start. I've only once tried any rock climbing, and couldn't believe how hard it was.

What's your rationale behind doing them instead of deadlifts?
I've done 240x1. Did it help improve my squat and deadlift numbers? Did it bo***cks.

Heresy. Louie Simmons will come and kneecap you in person. Next thing you'll be saying that it's possible to improve squat without box squats, chains, and bands!

More seriously: I'd say that GMs can be a useful assistance exercise, but I'd be tempted to do them for the training effect rather than the weights. In other words, more emphasis on strict form and hitting the target muscles than on the weight on the bar. FWIW, my preferred variant is with SSB to the pins in rack (keeps depth honest). I find these useful when a cycle is so organised that RDL would be desirable but not feasible (e.g. they tend to leave my upper back sore enough to interfere with subsequent sessions, and can be difficult to work into a cycle involving heavy deadlifting) - although I'd tend to do GHR in those circumstances anyway.

buzz said:Bumper plates - have got the chance to get both competition and training bumpers, made by the same factory that makes Eleiko, but branded as 'Crown'. I'm not sure whether to stock both types. The price difference is not that great. Comp plates would probably be around £150 for a 10kg plate, and the training 10kg would be about £135. Is it worth stocking both? Do these prices seem ok? Doc_D? Others?

At that price difference, no reason not to get the comp ones - but the price tag should really be coming from having a sweet IWF sticker on the plate. Having said this, the price seems rather excessive to me. I haven't looked at bumper prices recently, but do genuine Eleikos sell for much less than that? For comparison, Werksan quoted me $80 for a 10kg training plate, and these are of comp quality, but without the IWF sticker. $125 for 20kg, FWIW.

Try active release therapy

I'd love to, but the ART official site doesn't record any registered practitioners anywhere naer me. Correction: I've just checked, and there's now smoebody ni Sheffield. Still too far, really...

BTW: did ART help you?

Another vote for this. My first experience was even worse - psychopath not just sweeping IT band with forearm, but then attacking trigger points with elbow. Indescribable. Foam rolling is a walk in the park in comparison... Mind you, even a diminutive masseuse will generally inflict more pain than self-administered foam or stick rolling, at least in my experience. Just wish that I could afford to see a massage therapist more often.

buzz said:Doc/Others - the suppliers say they can make a squat shoe.

I don't have Safe shoes, but I do have a pair of Recorde boots (branded Pullum) that you could have. The basic heel shape should be right, but the heel at the back is wider than the Safe shoe, I'd say (it is nearly square at the back - to counteract lateral movement). They are also a tad too narrow - I got this pair on eBay, and although they *should* be identical to the battered pair that I have been using for the last 15 years - and they do *look* the same - they are somehow too tight on the forefoot, and my attempts to wear them in have pretty much been in vain. As I've been thinking of flogging them on eBay myself (but always stopping as I persuade myself to try them again), it would be no great loss to me to send them (and substantially cheaper for you than ordering Safe shoes, I suspect!)
