Cheers Ben, but I am an unequipped lifter so its off the chest that is the problem. I do lockout work but the very small ROM movements I just do on the odd occassion.

I like your 'living dangerous' style!

» How Much Upper Back Work Do You Do? (Go to post)29-06-2007 @ 10:50
I try and do about 4 exercises for upper back a week. Normally some heavy rows (dumbbell)then lighter pulldowns, bent over raises and maybe some seated dumbbell cleans. Most of the light stuff is done for shoulder health, but I do love my dumbbell rowing!

For a big back though, its deadlift time! Am assuming we all do that one Tongue

I saw him do the Great South Run in 96 or 97! He didn't do too bad for a big lad. I could tell he wasn't that far behind me as I could hear the chants of 'BRUNO!! BRUNO!!

Curcuit of following x 3;

Plate front raise x 10
Lateral raises x 10
Bent over raises x 10
Band pressdowns x 10

Pulldowns- 10x2

Mobility and band traction work.

Flet better after than I did before I went into the gym. Job is done.

Deadlift- 170x1x15
One leg press- 10x3
Hanging leg raises- 10x3
Grippers- RH; IM*2 x3, x2, x1 (10sec hold!) Nailed every rep!, RH; IM*1 x5, x8, x6

Nice session that turned great. Deadlifts felt good. Will be doing a light session most weeks now to work on speed, timing and set up. The last 3 singles I tried having my heels only inches apart (Dave Carter style). It felt really good and will experiment a bit more with this style.

But the grippers were great. Best session ever! Destroyed the IM*2 x 3 with the 1st 2 reps being able to grind the handles. The last single I even held for 10s. Last week only got 2 closes out of the 5. Possibly doing the deads got my CNS going, plus I used chalk which I havn't fo a while. All in all smashing!
» Hypertrophy - reps or weight ? (Go to post)26-06-2007 @ 11:09
Ian, I thought hores liked to watch their figures?

LOL! Despite having 2 degrees (and am currently studying for my doctorate) my spelling is the level of a chimp! Even more so when I type.

Seems like most people have done well using a varing rep x set scheme, but with a focus on lower rep range. Since the end of 2004 I have put on about 10kg (sans pharmacutical aid). Some of this is fat mind you! In that time I have done very few hard sets over 5. With the main hard work being done at the 1-3 mark (including DE effort stuff). Don't get me wrong I regulary do light sets, sometimes up to 20 reps, but not done with any intensity and manly as pre-hab work.

My own opinion is that diet is the most important factor in putting muscle on. I put weight on without changing my powerlifting routine as long as I am eating the kcals and protein.

If the diets in place then I acually think its individual as to what rep range to train at. Not very helpfull I know ! I personally need heavy loads using 5x5 or 3x10 style training with assistance exersices around 8-10. I have seen many bodybuilders that would be loath to do less than 10 reps in a set, using the typical 3-4 sets in 4-5 exercises per body part. I think however gear use may be a factor in this style of training working for most.

For me I need to have a least one eye on strength gain (hence lower reps) whilst eating like a hores!

Sivvy, BWLA does loads of comps down south. I could have done bout 4-5 so far this year if I wanted, not counting bench comps. You'd probably be in my division south midlands. Competed near Oxford and Bournemouth this year.

I am member of BDFPA but havn't competed for them (next year). They often have a meet in Southampon.

Bench press (comp grip)

Pin press (lockouts; pinky grip)

Change to comp grip

Dumbbell rows

60x10 (couple of cheats thrown in)

Seated dumbbell cleans

Solid session today. Technique didn't really really click benching. Not 'clean' enough reps, but got the work done. A little bit of tricep work with narrow grip lockouts then decided to have a bit of fun with lockouts with a comp grip. This means a very small ROM (approx 4"). Made sure to hold at lockout for a count of 5 and lower slowly to get the most out of it but the transfer to my bench is low. But its nice on occasion to press out a supra-max weight of the pins.

Happy with rows. Probably a pb there, but carn't say I track 5RM in an assistance lift Tongue
