Simon_T said: No it doesn't. That just proves they got to those numbers with the use of PED's then lost some strength when not using. There's no proof they'd have got that strong in the first place if drug-free. I agree, someone who has been on the juice for a lengthy period could come off, sit about on his arse for a year doing next to nothing and still be way stronger than before he went on. Being OFF and being life time drug free is vastly different.

What, lots of people that aren't necessarily strong calling themselves strongmen? Outrageous.Who'd have thought that would ever happen?

» Do you think Strongman is heading in the right direction? (Go to post) | 16-03-2012 @ 22:27
People have come to expect to see records broken constantly, even with advances made in training, nutrition and performance enhancement it just can't be sustainable. In order to keep pushing the boundaries of human performance athletes in all sports not just strength athletics are willing to go to greater lengths to feed those expectations. We have at some point to stop looking for heavier and heavier weights and be happy with seeing who is the strongest man for that year without the expectation that each year must surpass the previous one. I also would like to see athletes prize money reflect more accurately not only the punishment and dedication the sport demands but the entertainment value they generate for the production company. Who could blame top athletes from leaving the sport early to pursue other things while still in their prime when the sacrifices that they and their families make are not balanced with financial return.

martinb said:I train with Mike every Saturday, and he is right up there with Loz in the niceness stakes, something about sugden must angry up his blood I do get exactly what Stainless is saying, I'm thinking of Raging Bull where Jake is lamenting the fact that he will never be the heavyweight champ because his hands are too small some people want to compete against those of a similar size, others want to compete against all comers, neither are wrong IMO I know,i just looked up the definition of NICE in the dictionary and it's got a picture of Loz and Mike feeding an orphaned panda cub. How spooky is that you mentioning Raging Bull? i was just watching that last night.I wasn't aware that i was being subjected to subliminal brainwashing.I'm so gullible really.

Joni said: not really, i think i used to place higher in intermediate level open comps than in 105s, it is so much more competetive, a lot more guys just around your own ability levels which make it a battle and unpredictable, guys are more athletic, fitter, better conditioned, move well, technical, and top of that, strong. 105 scene in england is ridiculously good, and makes amazing comps. Prefer to watch them over majority of the open comps. I can't argue with any of that if you are competing purely for competition's sake, but if you want to see were your strength actualy lies you'd have to put it to the test in an open field.

MarkClegg said: YEAH ! Mr Stainless ! How is anyone hiding in the 105kgs ? I went to Portsmouth and shown my mate Frampton how to Deadlift and Hixxy is in this Weeks Euro Qualifyer. Say what you want about all this gaining weight BUT i don`t want to be a fat c**t 115kg and Hixxy doesn`t wanna be a fat c**t 145kg . We just wanna weigh what we weigh. I'm not for one second saying that anyone needs to put on weight, quite the reverse, what i am saying is that if you consider yourself strong then going up against somone that's heavier than you shouldn't put people off. To listen to some people talk you'd think that everybody in the opens is so far ahead of the 105s that there's no point in trying. I think those people are under selling their own ability. What if there was no weight categories? is it only people over 120kg that should even bother giving it a go? Surely if you were 100kg or so,or even lighter you'd still want to test yourself against those big guys? Maybe,it's just me but i thought that the best way to test your strength is to go up against bigger guys and see were you are rather than just measuring your strength and abilities against athletes of similar weight. What's wrong with strength just for strength's sake? should no one put themselves in a comp unless they expect to win or place high, that just sounds like ego to me. On the whole a good big un will beat a good little un like somebody's granny said, but not all big un's are good just because they're big.Surely we've all come up against some big huge f**kers that are weak as water,i know i have. The 105s like i said is a good testing ground, and full of really strong guys but surely the action is in taking on bigger guys in the open arena and beating them? |
