» Belts and Wraps etc. (Go to post)08-04-2009 @ 14:08
I tend to use a belt on my heavy (above 85% 1RM as you say) squats and overhead pressing, but thats about it. I sometimes deadlift in a belt, but i personally don't feel any benifits to this and even think it hinders me slightly (as i say though, thats just me, it could be completely different for you). What i'm getting at here is that i think you should experiment, see where you think a belt is going to be of use to you, but certainly don't rely on 1 24/7 (don't be the guy that does barbell curls wearing a belt...). Focus on working the core (thats the main thing), but if you feel a belt gives you a physical or even mental (as is the case for me more so than physical i beleive) edge, then by all means use one.

Shaun- Cheers buddy, i'll get it very soon. The reason 220 is such a big thing for me is because it would be 3x my bodyweight (just a little goal i have for myself). I know thats not a massive acheivement, but just a goal of mine.

Jaako- No problem mate, thanks for commenting. The 531 looks like a really solid program, basic with simple movements and a good percentage system. Can't wait to get started on it.

lil_lee- Cheers mate.

Mouser- Tell me about it! After this year of uni is up i'll be going to Body 2000 in Exeter, a much better gym indeed.

Cheers mate, i've got nothing on your lifts though, incredible. I would post a log up, but i'm currently at home for the hols (from uni) and i am currently just training at my local leisure centre which doesn't have the equipment needed for powerlifting (or lifting in pissing general to be honest). For example, it has no racks of any kind and the real deal breaker... no barbells! I'm just keeping it "ticking over" at this gym to be honest, trying to get the best workouts with the limited equipment. I'll get my proper 5/3/1 journal up in a few weeks when i'm back at uni in exeter. If you were intrested, this is what my first 5/3/1 cycle will look like (might not end up doing that much assistance though):-

Monday

Military Press- 531 (whatever week it is…)
Weighted Dips- 5x10
Chins- 5x10
Press downs- 5x10

Tuesday

Deadlift- 531…
GM’s- 5x10
Barbell Lunges- 5x10
Hanging Leg raise- 5x15

Thursday

Bench Press- 531…
Incline DB Bench- 5x10
DB Row- 5x10
Incline Skull crusher- 5x10

Friday

Squat- 531…
Squat- 5x10
SLDL- 5x10
Weighted sit-ups- 5x15

Paul

P.s. Looks like the "like a s**tting dog" line has stuck eh? Cheers to whoever it was that added that to my "profile". Haha :-)

Some fairly recent deadlift vids:-

220kg miss (Close to locking it out, shaking like a s**tting dog)

190kg double (fairly easy after the 220kg fail)

140kg for 10

Goals for 2009:-

Build up to 82.5kg and still be fairly lean (

Just saying hello to everyone on the forum. I really like the layout of this site and it seems to have alot of dedicated (and strong as hell) members. Thought i'd get involved. I'm also a member of powerliftinguk, user name on there is "Base". I plan on starting a 5/3/1 log soon as i've just got Jim Wendlers new e-book and really like the 5/3/1 idea. Anyway, some info so you get an idea of who i am and what i'm about:

Height:-5ft 7"
Weight:-73kg
BF%:- 12% (calipers measurement)
Years training:- 4

Maxes:- (All Raw)
Deadlift= 210kg
Squat= 140kg
Bench= 110kg
Overall= 460kg
