Hi all,

I've long been a reader on sugden and have decided it's time to get involved a bit more. I'm also hoping this log will help me with motivation when it comes to training.

I decided to take up powerlifting in December 14 after some encouragement from the owner of my gym who has got several others involved with the BDFPA. I also enjoy strongman and will look to do Britians natural in the future once I'm somewhere near strong enough.

I managed to make the qualifing weight for the bdfpa single lifts in the squat and deadlift and went on to win my category at the British. I'm still a junior so that obviously made it a lot easier. This log will be the road to the worlds for the next few months.

I'm between 6''5" and 6'6" and currently weigh 140kg.

I always avoided benching due to shoulder pain, but recently decided to just get on with it because I'd like to do full power next year. My best lifts as of last week are
Deadlift-250kg
Squat- 210kgx3
Bench-140kgx6

My goals are 300 dead, 250 squat and 180 bench. Here's hoping.

Due to the realisation of my blatant plagiarism regarding my last journal I've started a new one, saved the hassle of trying to rename the old one for the sake of about 5 updates. I'll copy the other stuff across anyway.

I noticed that I'd picked a very similar title to someone else's log, I just haven't figured out how to change it.

Supported row

20 x 8
60 x 8
70 x 8
75 x 8. 2 sets

Low cable row

Stack x 8. 5 sets

Underhand pull down

Stack x 5. 8 sets

After this I went over to the gym I've started work at, it's just been redone and I went through all the resistance machines to get a feel for them. It's a commercial gym and I'd never normally train there. I hit hamstrings quite hard and finished with a few bicep curls.

Done. Tired today. Will bench a bit tomorrow and then rest up and foam roll ready to squat again Sunday.

Squat

Warm up. Took a long time, feeling sore.
140 x 5
160 x 5
180 x 5
190 x 7. Failed 8.

Not unhappy with that, but definitely lacking power today.

Front squat.

60 x 3
80 x 3
100 x 3. 3 sets.

Gave up due to wrist pain, still new to me.

Leg extension

8 x 5.

Done. Think I'm due a rest day before I squat again. Calves are very sore making it difficult out of the hole.

Bench

Warm up.
100 x 6
110 x 6
120 x 6
130 x 6
140 x 6. 2 sets

Though about trying 150 but being ambitious is what has ruined my shoulder previously, same reason I stick to sets of 6 when it feels heavy, grinding out reps 7 and 8 is where I'll get pain and injury.

Spoto Press.

100 x 6
110 x 6. 4 sets

Only discovered these after reading through unit94s log and I thought training like someone who is hell of a lot stronger than me seemed like a good idea. I liked them, feel like they'll help my paused bench.

Seated barbell press.

60 x 8. 5 sets.

Close grip bench.

100 x 6. 5 sets.

Made this very tricep heavy by putting the bar high on the chest and keeping the elbows tucked in, almost French press esque.

Done. Another good session. Worked on setting my shoulders up properly on the bench for my first rep as it always seems erratic compared to the rest. Training seems to be going well, maybe this journal really is helping. At 142kg now so will have to keep an eye to make sure I stay within my 145 limit.

Deadlift - following a Coan/Phillipi program.

Warm up.
220 x 3. Only supposed to do 2 but felt easy, slight tweak in my back on the 3rd rep so I stopped. Lesson learned.

180 x 3. 8 sets. 90 seconds rest.

Circuit.
Straight leg deadlift x 8
Barbell row x 8
Underhand pull down x 8
Good morning x 8.

Ran the circuit 3 times, kept the weights light-ish. Felt a lot easier this week cardio wise.

Done. Another pleasing session. Worked on deadlift form and didn't feel strained in the lower back at 180. Maybe I'm starting to grow hamstrings.

5-4-15

Training been all over the place this week. Just decided to fit in a quick squat session.

Squat.

Warm up
60 x lots
100 x 5
140 x 4
180 x 10. 2 sets.

Done. Quite happy with 180 for 10, felt like work at about rep 4 but didn't feel too much harder on the last rep. It's made me aware of how lazy I can be when it comes to reps. I think I might have a few weeks of volume of squatting and might up it to squatting 3 times a week. 8 weeks of full training left before the world single lifts and I'm very keen to do something meaningful there.

Strange week this week, training has had to be worked around various commitments.

Powerclean

Felt slow and stiff, took a lot of getting warm.
60 x 3. Loads of sets
80 x 3. 2 sets
90 x 3
100 x 3
105 x 3
110 x 3.

I currently running a Coan/Philipi deadlift cycle, started on Monday and I'm running the assistance work twice a week to try and hit my obvious weaknesses.

Straight leg deadlift x 8
Barbell row x 8
Underhand lat pull down x 8
Good morning x 8

Circuit run 3 times. I have truly poor hamstrings.

Reverse curls 5 x 8 at 40kg. Decided to start a bit of biceps and getting some grip at the same time.

Done. Took a while to get into it, but got it all done.

» WSM stones (Go to post)26-03-2015 @ 12:07
I've just read this on the IronMind forum.

"except in 2010 where they were replaced by barrel loading, the atlas stones have been used a lot recently to settle group standings. This is what would have happened from 2009 to 2014 with the stones being double points:
2009: No changes to the finalists
2011: No changes to the finalists
2012: No presumed changes to the finalists (in heat 4, Ervin Katona lifted up one stone only but could have done more if needed, and the same scenario occurred with Krszystof Radzikowski in heat 5)
2013: No changes to the finalists
2014: In heat 2, Dave Ostlund would have taken Jean-François Caron's qualifying spot but Caron would have remained in the final as a wild card."

All credit to Eloi Fournier for this work, I've just copied and pasted it.

I know they've handed out 'King of the stones' trophies in the past for the heats. Does anyone know if this came with a financial reward as well? I know money can't just be magicked up, but that's surely a better way than screwing some of the guys over for the sake of better tv.

I did the single lifts this year, a shoulder problem prevented me from being anywhere near ready to bench. But I'll be watching the results with interest.
I'm new to the powerlifting scene so I'm keen to see how I measure up.
