Brian Shaw is a warrior, he will finish top 2.

I agree. Shaw is still at or close to his best. Just others are improving and the mix of events give Licis and Kieliszkowski a chance of beating him.

Nobody ever talks about Shaw's longevity but he has appeared in the equal second most finals of all time. Nobody apart from Z has ever been able to be so good for so long. It's natural that he will be succeeded eventually.

While strictly true, this isnt an accurate picture because Felix didn't get involved in DB due to the fact it couldn't change anything. He did 1 rep just to guarantee a place in stone off. He never went out fighting for points.

A fair point, however given previous performances at that sort of event I doubt he would have done much better.

And lets be honest, how many of us would be complaining had Felix and Bishop qualified, and Stoltman beat Oberst despite being many points behind.

He deadlifted 460 at Arnold, drew with Thor on overhead...2nd marginally in frame after Pritchett who isnt there, stones will be good, bus pull will be also without stupid attachment(top 2 for sure)..loading is always 50/50 with anyone.

Deadlift in the heat was just low and put him in a potential injury position so didn't push it. Final will be with a car and higher start position.

It's more that with the events others may have just become better.

I can't see Shaw beating either Licis or Kieliszkowki at loading and potentially others like Thor, Els, Janashia could get between them.

Frame could go either but Shaw has never won the frame carry at WSM. I could easily see Kieliszkowski winning the first two events and being 6 points or so above Shaw.

Truck pull he could come anywhere from 1-4. Kielszkowski won that event last year so I would expect top three. Licis will probably drop points here

Deadlift for reps I expect Shaw to be in contention to win. Licis will also do well. Probably Shaw, Thor, Licis and Caron fighting for top 3. Kila will drop points.

Overhead if it is truly on an Olympic bar it favours the more athletic guys like Licis and Kila. I expect them to beat him.

Stones - Licis, Kila and Shaw all excellent on stones. I expect Shaw to win the event to just about claim second.

I don't think it's Shaw being off his game as such. Just that he is gradually being caught by some of the pack and having two moving events gives them a chance. Replace loading with Fingers or a Toss and I would back Shaw for a comfortable second place.

I must have missed something. What's up with his hand?

According to him his grip is permanently f**ked from his finger dislocation two years ago.

Even if not There are at least 5 guys in that final I can't see him beating on the frame.

Realistically... he could win at a very big push, deadlift and max overhead. Though he'd be up against it. But it's pretty likley he'd be outside top 5 on stones, farmers and especially loading, probably outside top 7. Bus pull top 3. So on his best performance he'd probably just miss the podium. I don't know. But what would aid him and Z is Bishop, Felix and Shahlaei being f**ked over. Would have been pushing top 2-4 at loading abd frame.

If Ed's hand as bad as he says it is then no way is he finishing in the top half on the frame. Almost certainly towards the back in loading as well.

Yes, it seems likely that he wouldn’t have beaten Thor, but with Z out of the picture, Shaw far from his best and the others mostly still a way of the pace (in terms of last year’s top 3), wouldn’t he have been pretty likely to at least get second?

With those events he wouldn't have made the podium IMO.

I think Kieliszkowski will beat Licis. I'd go Thor, Shaw, kila, Licis.

Felix, Stoltman and Bishop all through to the stone off. I think Stoltman will beat Oberst which will be a little unfair on OB seeing as under fair rules he would be home and dry. Bishop vs Els I have no idea. Again under fair rules Bishop would be home and dry. Same for Felix.

Along with Felix, Marius Lalas has to be the surprise of the competition. I think he will lose to Belsak on stones but I doubt any of us thought he would be one of the three in a very tough group.

Mikeneto said:He won bus pull also in the heats which will be in the final. He will do decent enough, top 5...no real disaster events for him in the final.

He will come bottom half in Frame and Loading.

Its great how competitive all the groups are this year. Almost as if the sport stands up on it's own without any gimmicks to keep it interesting. All these groups would be going down to the wire anyway. Some of them, like group 1, would probably have gone into the stones with 4 guys fighting for second place.

Pudz was a great athlete for his era. Very competitive guy

his performance in the 03 final is probably the best performance I have seen in WSM. He demolished a field that included four other past or future champions.

They were, but i dont agree that makes it unbalanced. The seeding is done to try and make sure as many top athletes make the final as possible, it is not done to try and balance things out.
Due to the nature of the sport it doesn't need help to be balanced, the strongest man will make it to the final either way.
I do agree some of the seeding seems off this year. Z appears to have been seeded based on his legacy rather than his strength, and even so he may still miss out on the final.
Shiv is a great athlete, if he claims a spot in the final it is because he was stronger than the next man, so fair play to him.
Sadly i actually think the stupid stones rule will prevent him making the final. With the tall platforms at WSM i dont see him winning a stone off with either athlete, so he'd need to win the group outright, and thats a huge ask in such a tough group.

If you have 3 of the best 10 in a group together then it is unbalanced. I think you could argue that's the case for groups 1 and 5. I don't see it as a major issue. It's kind of inevitable.

Why shouldn't Shiv be in their group? He's a quality athlete and if they can't beat him they don't deserve to be in the final (and i backed Shiv for a top 5 finish after he podiumed Arnolds)

It's a bit unbalanced but I believe after the first seed, which would have been Kila in this case, groups were drawn at random.

Before Caron's injury his was the hardest group to qualify from IMO. Both Caron and Licis should have been seeded and Z not.

Felix and Stoltman could final from here. They're both good at stones so only need top 3 to have a really good shout.

Caron's injury really opens up that group.
