ECHR is hearing a massive case on the right of the government to snoop at the moment. I think this might be a big reason Conservatives want out. Your secret service gives a huge amount of data to the USA in exchange for hardware and shared info. They don't want a load of bills for breaking peoples human rights. www.channel4.com/news/privacy-gchq-eu-case-legal-mobile-pho...

There have been a few Irish people taking cases about addressing liability for child abuse of children in care. I imagine the judgements will have a knock on effect for people in GNIB effected by the likes of Saville and Rotherham child abuse of Children in state care (www.rte.ie/news/2014/0128/500568-louise-okeeffe/ is one such judgement. Others in the ECHR)

The Dudgeon v United_Kingdom case brought to the ECHR was probably the biggest Gay Rights law passed in Europe and effectively legalised being gay in Europe for any states that hadn't already legalised it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dudgeon_v_United_Kingdom

Its not all bad stuff coming from ECHR.

I reckon a lot of Brits today probably don't know who those two are.

I always think of the future in terms of Star Trek. If the world goes the way of the Ferengi Thatcher/Regan will be like heroes. (Did you ever notice Ferengi heads are identical to Thatchers silhouette.)
If it goes more like Federation I'm thinking post war Britain's leaders will be seen as visionaries. NHS, Welfare State, full employment etc.

Would that not make MPs even more remote than they are now?

The Labour and Conservative political elite come from public school backgrounds and very few have worked or experienced what I would consider normal life.
Not sure its possible for them to be more remote without them taking up residence on a moon base:-)

Anyone else think there are too many MP's. Anymore than 1 per million people seems excessive to me. The cabinet seems to hold all the cards and whips the party vote anyway.
God knows what half the Back Bench and Lords do with themselves.

We're having a vote to lower the age a person can become president to 21 in Ireland. President is kind of like the Queen in responsibility here. There is a serious chance of these running if it passes.

Its funny how much NHS, which is largely performing well, dominates your discussion vs education, ownership of national assets, public facilities, justice reform and foreign policy.
As an outsider getting news from papers I find them a bit Punch and Judy like, see http://rt.com/op-edge/255273-uk-election-media-politics/
