I'm in no position to offer advice, but I doubt I could get much leg drive on bench with my feet right in front. I have mine wider apart. That said, it probably depends on bench height and personal feel.

Im trying to reinvent my bench, in all honesty im no where near as clued up on the bench as i am the other lifts (evidently), so will play around with different feet positioning! Thanks for your input Pete!

My advice - keep going hard at it !

thanks mark, I'm going to retry a big dead at a regional in 3 weeks, still believe i can do 272.5! Only one way to find out.

on another note at the end of my session did some dead hangs holding onto a bar, not taxing but felt tough, will add these + other suggestions and see how I get on, thanks everyone!

It may pay to have your back looked at. If the bar was fine and the chalk ok and there is nothing obvious, it could be back related. I don't know the science behind it but something amiss along the spine at roughly shoulder blade level can affect grip.
It has happened to me more than once, dodgy grip one day, back physio two days later and grip just fine the next time. I assume this is an intermittent thing which would also support the theory.
Nice lifting by the way

Thanks pete, never heard of that before so will have a look, it is intermittent as I've near missed 270 no issues and pulled 261 a week before comp and held for a few secs at the top, I reckon someone sabotaged my chalk with talc :P

Mebbee hammer the triceps more for the bench and take a narrower grip; it'll take a good few weeks of hammering the bench, dips and heavy tri work to see if this is the way forward but you never know!

As for grip; I'd say hammer Captains of Crush (get the 1 & 1.5 and start from there); plate pinch grip work, axle work for deads and curls (just use a 7ft piece of scaffold bar if you havent got access to a proper axle bar)

You could also consider learning hook grip!

thanks for the ideas mate! ill defo do some of these and will look into the captains of crush, def need more volume on pressing, but fort wider grip may be better than narrow?

Paul_D said:Great total, also, great vids. I've been watching for a little while now.... Like a lifting lurker.

Super squatting especially.

You're obviously a fantastic deadlifter for your weight, but I've never had any grip issues and I put this down to holding heavy singles (90%+) for 3/4 seconds. Also (strangely), decently heavy hammer curls seem to have a correlation to grip strength for me due to forearms gains.

Keep it up, look forward to a 600+ from you in the very near future.

thanks alot paul, I seem to hold for the minimum amount of time at top of reps unless I think about it, will hold each last rep now to similar comp standard, may as well chuck in some hammers too!

Skip to 2mins 30 to avoid my lovely black country accent...

Thought I would post in here for more advice, this is the second time I have dropped 265kg in comp, apart from having a s**t grip, is there anything I'm doing obviously wrong, if it is just s**t grip, what are the better exercises to improve grip specifically for deadlifting?

Thanks for any help

Luke

Just back off a little break, time to review my performance at BDFPA nationals!

Weighed in at 73.8kg, which is light, but good to know I can make the 74s for future reference

Squats

200kg opener-nice and quick
210kg-good- 3 whites
215.5kg- British record for 2 mins, beaten on a 4th lift of 216kg

Bench
120kg-tough-but good
125xf
125x5- no where near, really poor and needs addressing- at this point was 12.5kg behind the leader

Deadlift
245kg-fast- but not holding well at the top?
257.5kg- best rep I've ever done, faster than 245, but again, struggling to hold...
265kgxf-this was for the win, came up ok, but couldn't hold,

overall finished a close second with 593kg, same as last year, 10kg down on bench, 12.5 up on squat, and 2.5kg down on deadlift, even though I missed 265 I feel confident 272.5 would of gone if grip felt better, if you see something I did which would of impeded performance let me know!
