newhybrid said: certainly was. got great help and encouragement. yesterday was the 1st time i had seen a monolift so i was a little apprehensive but the spotters and loaders soon put me at ease. Well done for yesterday. Just to put your performance into perspective though, 572.5kg is the GBPF 105kg British senior unequipped qualifying standard.

Using equipment to squat weights at that level is not powerlifting. Any right-minded coach should be encouraging this guy to put up some decent raw numbers before using two layers of kit to achieve a 200kg squat. And I don't hate equipped lifting at all, but to see it entered into in this way does its credibility no favours at all.

You weigh 100kg and and are, presumably, looking to squat 200kg in briefs AND a suit. You must be either still at primary school or a girl. Sorry to hate on equipped lifting. As I have done a bit myself in the past, I do feel entitled to say that is absolutely ridiculous and whatever you think you are doing, it is not powerlifting.

VanillaGorilla said: You'll notice I said be in a position to hit a 575 total, not that that is my target. Obviously I will be aiming higher, but as I recall that is the qualifying total required so obviously I would need to be in a position to hit that. Simple really. My clients don't really care what I do or have done, they care about how effective my coaching is. Pretty sure Manchester United players weren't bothered that Fergie never won the Champions League as a player. You seemed to be saying it was for your CV. I have noticed a raft of PTs and their clients at divisional powerlifting competitions recently. I'm all for people getting involved in the sport, but was concerned that someone of your calibre was only interested in doing the bare minimum possible to describe yourself as a 'national standard' powerlifter.

VanillaGorilla said: I still have the nagging little idea of potentially adding WL and PL to my national final resume... The way I figure it is training towards a 275+ WL total will leave me in the position to hit a 575 PL total, both of which will see me verging on nationals. That'd be a nice hat trick to have I feel. We shall see where the next 12 months takes me. I think you could set your sights a bit higher than a 575 total. Do you just want to tell your clients that you came last at a national championships, or do you want to tell them you are actually a national standard lifter?

Gubernatrix said:Benni in strongman is an interesting prospect! I randomly heard he was going to Australia few days ago when I was on the phone to Barclays business banking and the guy I was speaking to, when he found out what my business was, said, 'I was speaking to a bloke the other day who does World's Strongest Man.' So obviously I asked who, and turns out it was Benni. Nice to be chatting to my bank about strongman. So much for the Data Protection Act.
