» Sad day in strongman, Mike jenkins passes away. (Go to post)29-11-2013 @ 08:37
Along with the death of Jesse Marunde, this is probably the most shocked that I've ever been regarding a strongman's death.

RIP, Mike

Friday 29/11

I squeezed in a quick session this morning.

Deadlifts

Worked up to 222.5 kg x 10 - I wasn't feeling particularly strong but managed to force out the intended 10 reps. There were a few pauses; particularly before the last rep.

I then did 'some' overhead work but had to leave earlier than I'd have liked.

Pete - that's impressive mate. Why not get into a bit again to go alongside your lifting? Could be your strongest AND fittest ever next year? That is my plan anyway.

Thanks, Millsy. If I did any rowing again, I'd realistically only be aiming to compete over 500m. That 2000m stuff is pretty intimidating these days. Genuinely, good luck with being your strongest AND fittest ever next year. However, I'd be happy just to the strength part of it as I used to compete in middle distance running as a teenager and doubt that I'll ever get to that level of fitness again. In fact, my best rowing time was primarily achieved because of high fitness levels (rather than decent strength) - I was very skinny and I'd not done too much weight training at the time. I can't remember my typical stroke rate but I know that it wasn't low.

Sparrow said:Thanks for the lik Pete. I'll have a look at that in some detail this week to see 'where I stand'. Out of interest, what sort of rowing times have you done yourself? You are certainly built for it and have a strong pull.

No problem, Millsy.

I was into Concept 2 when I was in my late teens. I was much lighter and not fat. I think that I got down to 6.39 for 2000m but, because I compared myself to Pinsent and Redgrave who rowed about 50 seconds faster, I thought that I was completely s**t. I wish that I'd continued with it. Unhappy and another Unhappy

Monday 25/11

The same session as last Monday. I'll increase the load, on my squats, in the new year.

Wednesday 27/11

Deadlifts

Not worth mentioning. I felt weak today.

Jerks

s**t. Today's session was probably even less impressive than the crap one from a fortnight ago. Worst of all, I've no idea why.

Not that I reckon I'd get to either for a long long time.

Sparrow said: With your level of fitness I would expect you to get that 2k time in no time at all.

It could be argued, for a few reasons, that this isn't 'scientific' but a smaller proportion of rowers have registered a 1.26 (for 500m) than those who have registered a 6.59 (for 2000m).

On a personal note, at the moment, I'd be more confident of getting a 1.26 than a 6.59.

For the most part, this thread has provided the answers that I was hoping for when I asked the original question. Lifters have compared their experiences of different bars. Happy

It's going to take something special to stop you from being the first to reach the 'Big 3'. Nice work!

I've got 39 kg to go! Lol. If I tapered into a max single attempt, however, I reckon that I'd get quite a few kilos closer. I'll be looking to prove that early next year though.

Absolutely!

I've got a 'no brand' Oly bar at home which now feels terrible. I've had it for years and it felt OK before I became used to using one of these Eleiko bars.

I'm trying to decide which bar I should get for home so that I can get a bit more training in. If I was still in the UK, I'd probably have bought one from Strength Shop but I don't think that Brian's affordable bars are available over here.

I need to be realistic, I'm not as rich as you Wink

I deadlift with an eleiko WL bar and I love it. A lot bendier than most bars you will use.

It does seem to have a 'very reasonable' amount of bend. I like it Happy

unit94 said:I pull sometimes with an eleiko weightlifting bar and sometimes with ivanko powerlifting and haven't noticed any difference, my 310 and 320 pulls were done on a Texas power bar. I am strong off the floor though so it might make more difference to someone that has a sticking point right off the floor.

Interesting

I've been taking my training more seriously recently, after about 10 years of doing very little. I've started to consider the bars that I train with. Almost exclusively, I use an Eleiko (Training) WL bar. How will this affect my deadlifting compared to some of the main alternatives?

What do you think is more impressive:
500m in 1.26, or
2000m in 6.59?
I'm sure I can knock 10-15 secs off the 2k, not sure how much I could knock off the 500 though.

It's a difficult question to answer but I reckon that the 500m time is slightly more impressive. The 2000m obviously requires a big heart (metaphorically and literally), which is impressive in itself.

2000m in about 6.45, without much difference to your 500m time, would make the longer distance your better event - IMHO.
