» Unit 20 Strength Challenge (novice) (Go to post)05-11-2007 @ 17:48

My dad was videoing some of the other competitors and got quite a bit of pete. I dont know if you got your own video done but if you want me to post it up let me know mate.

Will, I very much appreciate this. Happy

Jonny has some of my lifts on camera. However, you might have some different stuff that isn't on Jonny's camera.

In other words, I would LOVE you to upload my vids. Thanks VERY much.Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Who arranged for them to be printed?
Which company did you go through?
How many did you have to order?
How much did they cost - each?

I want to design a Dungeon t-shirt. I know that Joni and Millsy agreed that it would be a good idea so that's at least 3 people(including me). I'm just trying to get an idea of cost etc.

Axle 100kg for reps

My aim to get one rep was obviously a tough but achievable goal. However, I secretly wanted two reps despite my limited training suggesting that I'd been on the crack pipe too much.

However, secret aim achieved, 2 reps. Happy. 7th place.

Max 15 inch Deadlift

I was thinking of mid 200s. I got 260kg which was quite tough. Passed at 270kg. When I went for 280kg, I think that someone had cheekily added some superglue to the tyres.

Still quite happy with 260kg though. Joint 5th.

320kg Yoke

I felt like I had the strength but on my first two pickups I didn't even move 50cm. Finally found a better position on my back and walked five metres(4.99m) before Mr Murray called time. Easy to say but once I was more comfortable, I thought I could have gone the whole distance on that carry. The time limit was there for a reason though.

Gutted with this as I got LAAAAASSSSSTTTT place.

280kg Frame Walk

Went first due to the Yoke Joke Wink Grin. Pickup was very easy and got into a rhythm but when I accelerated I lost balance and dropped the bas***d. Tried to do a Pudge pickup (mega quick, off balance) but instead had to reset myself which wasted a good few seconds in total.

12 seconds overall for the 10m. About 6th or 7th place.

50kg dumbbell press

Grinded out a rep. 9th place. OK with that on a weak event that I only tried for the first time on Tuesday.

135kg stone

2 reps. The second felt like a real grinder. Joint 5th here.

OVERALL Joint 8th though I was announced as 9th on the day. I suppose everyone could say this but just a bit better on one event(Yoke) could have put me maybe 2 places higher.

Gives me something to work on for next year. Not bad considering my lack of training since July(only 3 gym sessions and 3 events sessions - only one of which was specific to the comp, after having my arm twisted by Brian). My first comp for two and a half years. Can't wait for next year.

BSM qualifiers next year once I've trained properly.Grin Grin

Plan for the axle.

Put everything into getting a one motion power clean to the shoulders. If that goes right then obviously go for the press.

If the clean goes wrong use the next 60-70 secs to rest and then go for the clean in "stages".

I'm giving away tactics here. Doh!

Mine is fairly basic

Lucozade/powerade
water
red bull
light snacks

Any other "must-haves" for contest day?

Lads,

I went to a Steve Brooks show about five years ago and each competitor had 'theme music'. They were introduced using it before the any of the events had started and they played a 5-10 second clip before each competitor did each of their events. It's maybe a bit cheesy but Boxing have obviously done it for years and I think that Cricket do it too(in Twenty20) when a batter comes out.

I know some people will probably take the piss out of this but I personally think that to appeal to a wider audience strongman needs to be a bit 'showbiz'. For my theme song, I was thinking about 'Made in England (Elton John)' to wind up the ScotsGrin Wink or Barbie Girl to take the piss out of myself. I can't quite decide.Confused

Yeah, I suppose there might be one or two guys who no rep an event. We'll see.

On getting there, my Dad lives just over the border so I'm staying at his on Fri night and we're travelling the rest of the way on Sat morn.

Just gonna rest before the comp now.

30th October

Trained at Mr Mills' place tonight. I was feeling pretty worried about at least three of Saturday's events(make that worried about 6 of Saturday's eventsUnhappy )

In all seriousness, I now realise that I should have done one of two things:

1. Trained for more than a handful of sessions since about June/July
2. Not entered the comp

Anyway, I'm not going to pull out now Happy

YOKE

Went OK with my warm up weights including the 280kg

320kg, "easy pickup" then went a 3 metres or so
320kg, another quite easy pickup then walked a massive ONE step
320kg, pickup still felt fine but couldn't pick up my leg without dropping the yoke

AXLE

Tried many weird and wonderful ways to clean the axle without too much success.

75kg Mixed grip clean to stomach, kept the mixed grip edged it another 6 inches, then still with the mixed grip got it too my shoulders, balanced it with one hand on my shoulders whilst I swapped my hand around then got the press.

Needless to say, Jonny said he'd never come across someone with that exact technique. It was very awkward but I couldn't think of another way.

I then used the same technique for a rep with 85kg.

Same technique again with 95kg. This time I failed the press.

DUMBBELL one handed

Some easy warmups with 20kg and 30kg

Still quite comfortable at 40kg with both left and right hand

Bombed out at 50kg. Nearly locked out on first attempt with the right but didn't have the core and/or tricep strength. The bad starting position didn't help either.

So, there you go, I'm sure all the other lads are now quaking in their boots. Wink

The worry that I had has now become much more severeEmbarassed

Why so many sets of doubles, mate? That's a genuine question by the way, not a criticism.Wink

Hi Titch,

There isn't a science behind it!I'm just trying to get a bit of volume in as I'm very inconsistent with my training (and that's putting it very, very mildly). I got in a bit of consistent training about 4 months ago but apart from the odd session, I've not trained for about 2 and a half years.

I'm going to reduce the volume when the numbers get somewhere near what I think I'm capable of.

My target is to beat Pete Grin

Well despite being a competitive person and I certainly won't be giving you any points for free, unless your back causes you major problems, you will probably beat me on most/all events.

Let's run through them

Axle - You'll probably beat me quite easily. I'll kinda be happy with 1 rep.

Deadlift - Might be quite close but you've probably got a few kilos on me.

Yoke - I'll be very happy to finish the course so this one should be yours.

Frame Carry - IMHO, my best chance to maybe steal a point or two from you - if I can get a half decent pickup.

Dumbell Press - Might be quite close. I'm genuinely unsure how I might do.

Stones - Again might be quite close. Your extra experience (due to your hard work with the stones) might get you through your reps a bit quicker than me.

Are these mind games or Pete being realistic?

Just Pete being realistic!!!

» concept 2 rowing times (Go to post)28-10-2007 @ 22:21
I was at the Trafford Centre yesterday and in the food court they had a Concept 2 challenge. You had to row as far as possible in 1 minute. They put us on the big screen, did mini interviews with us and also had a projector that simulated a race(you saw your "boat" against your competitor's "boat"). I rowed 351 metres(which is 1min 25sec pace per 500m). I beat the other guy by nearly 100m. Grin

Before I rowed they told me that the furthest distance of the day would win "over a hundred pounds worth of prizes". Once I was in the lead they weren't quite as enthusiastic about the prizes. When I went back to check a couple of hours later(to get my prizes Grin), they said that I "wasn't the winner" but mysteriously couldn't tell me the winning distance nor who won. I wonder if something fishy was going on!!Eek

Cheers Jonathan!

I was actually wondering about some of the rules. Have they been listed somewhere or are yourself and Mr Murray going to tell the guys on the day?

In particular, I was wondering about the axle. If we felt "stupid" enough, could we lift it onto our knees, then squat down and then kind of "Zercher lift(on the forearms)/front squat" it to our shoulders? Or would this be against the rules?

Also, at what height is the bar set for the stone?

Cheers Pete
