As a first year at Uni of Nottingham, I trained 3 or 4 times/week in the University Park gym because it was on my doorstep and was pretty cheap for student membership. It doesnt have any facilities for weightlifting (no bumpers/platforms) but has barbells, benches and 1 squat rack (which gets rammed after 4pm). The Strength and Conditioning room is supposed to be good, but small, however it's only open to sports' first teams or something like that. This year I'm looking at other gyms because I'm living slightly closer to the city centre. At the moment im thinking that Castle Gym is my best option - I don't do olympic lifting so I dont have many requirements other than bench press, squat racks and room to deadlift. Another gym I am thinking about is Raw Physique, however I have been told that the bars are bent/rubbish. Both of these seem to be geared to bodybuilding but Im not too fussed by that. I phoned up a few more gyms - one receptionist didnt know if they had squat racks and wouldnt ask anyone. Both gyms are substantially cheaper than CrossFit Nottingham however in the end you get what you pay for. Links to both gyms are here: http://castlegymnotts.co.uk/ http://rawphysiquegym.co.uk/ EDIT: I also just noticed you said 'in september' so if you are joining Uni of Nottingham this year, there is an Olympic Lifting & Powerlifting society which we are hoping to start up, which may give us access to bumper plates and other nice things, in the strength and conditioning room or somewhere else. Which would enable you to lift with other lifters with decent equipment.

I'm a student in Nottingham and finding a good gym is very hard. The Uni of Nottingham gym is poor for wl, not sure about Trent's. Ive been searching for ages for a good gym and the only one with your requirements would be CrossFit Nottingham http://www.crossfitnottingham.co.uk/ but it's expensive.

7th August 2013 Squat: 1x6xbar 1x5x40 high bar 1x5x60 3x5x80 Bench Press: 1x8xbar 1x5x60 1x3x80 1x1x 90,95 paused 3x5x105... I was bro-spotted and I think this is more like 5,4,3. 'Its all you' when their fingers were all over it. Who knows. Maybe I did fail that last rep and then have a miraculous burst of strength before it fell on my chest... I will do 105 again next week to make sure. Chinups: 5xbw 3x5x 5kg.

31st July 2013 Squat: 1x6xbar 1x5x40 high bar paused 1x5x50 3x5x60 no pain after hitting the bump below knee with a weight plate on monday which killed at the time. Bench Press: 1x8xbar 1x5x60 1x3x80 1x1x 90,95kg paused 102.5 x 5,5,3. 4th was off chest. Corrected my wrist alignment so I guess it has helped. They still have a tendancy to roll back on heavier weights and I need help unracking to keep them straight. Chinups: bw x5 2.5kg x 5,5,3

EllD90 said:3x170KG DOH is strong mate. Carry on with the power cleans, I think once you nail technique, they become pretty handy and effective. Great for trap/rear delt work too. I've only just started getting in to them properly. cheers mate. I really struggle with the second pull when cleaning but once thats nailed i'll probably like them more!

Post Edited: 29.07.2013 @ 11:26 AM by Joe_MF 29th July 2013Squats: 1x8xbar 1x8x40 high bar 3x8x50 very easy stuff. Overhead Press: 1x8xbar 1x5x40 1x3x50 3x5x57.5 fast(ish) Deadlift: 1x8x60 tried some sumo stance on 100 but wasnt as fast as normal 1x3x100 1x3x140 1x1x160 1x5x170 first 3 reps overhand+chalk but bar slipped to fingertips. last 2 reps mixed grip which were fine grip-wise, quite slow. ~2.5 seconds per rep. form is good, legs are a bit shaky though. edit: just updating my offline log and a month ago I was pulling 5x170 but faster apparently.

alekothegreek said: im at RGU in Aberdeen, what about you? would be cool to do some kind of comp between uni's, dont know if there is like a league or anything Nottingham. There is this competition: http://www.bdfpa.co.uk/events/2013%20Entry%20Forms/2013%20Univ... But its in bournemouth (south coast) so quite a way from Aberdeen Having competitions between unis would be great, and would probably encourage more people to take up powerlifting as a sport. Or at least try it. |
