Slightly off topic, but can anyone remember "The Games"? It ran for 3 years and involved celebrities training for and competing against each other in various sports (diving, speed skating, sumo,...). I used to particularly enjoy watching the weightlifting. I remember Pat Sharp jerking 50Kg overhead with really good technique, but making it look like it weighed about 3 times as much! The record was 83Kg, held by some guy off Hollyoaks.

No real point to this post. I'm just reminiscing!

It was on a year or two ago, can't remember everyone in it, think some guy from So Solid Crew and a posh dude who got up quite a bit higher than 83kg (I think!!)

The record was definitely 83Kg!!! James Hewitt (the posh guy?) did 82.5Kg and some guy called Romeo (is he from "So Solid Crew"?) did the same or marginally less.

Chesney Hawkes did a massive 53Kg. Adam Rickett was sub 50Kg!

I think I've brought this up to make myself feel strong again, after having to face up to female athletes and female weightlifters possibly being able to lift more than me!!!

Thought you'd power clean more than that, jt. You're so strong off the floor.

Are strongmen/powerlifters just generally poor at power cleaning? It's got to be a flexibility issue.

In Heat 3 of World's Strongest Man 1997 they had barbell clean & press for max. The general standard was 150/160. The heaviest weight attempted was 170 by Heinz Ollesch, but he couldn't clean it! Heinz was a MONSTER!

Steve, just out of interest, when you could clean 160, roughly how much could you dead lift?

So how much can you clean?

I could power clean over 150kg when I was cleaning just over 160kg - a difference of only about 6%

I'm NOWHERE NEAR flexible enough to perform a squat clean. Wish I was!

Wow, good lifts. Are you a competitive weightlifter?

I wouldn't have thought a 150:160 ratio was typical. Suppose it depends on your individual strengths.

The best 48kg junior women weightlifters can clean over 112.5kg. Why would it be difficult to imagine one of the best all round athletes in the World training full time at 25% heavier bodyweight to be able to do that?

The WORLD record clean & jerk for 48Kg women is 120Kg, and the Olympic record is 117Kg.

No 48Kg female weightlifter would currently be able to POWER clean 112.5Kg.

I'm an under 105Kg strongman of moderate ability, and my best power clean at the moment is 112.5Kg. (I think technique and poor flexibility hold me back slightly). I find it difficult to imagine a 60Kg female athlete out-lifting me! Embarrassing if it's true!

Maybe it's worth strongmen looking at the way athletes train. There could be valuable secrets to learn.

Michaela Breeze, 63Kg class. She clean & jerked 100Kg in Beijing, but has done 120Kg (national record).

Denise Lewis CAN'T have power cleaned 115Kg.

Our only female weightlifter in the Olympics (Michaela?) was cleaning and jerking around the 100/110 mark, if I remember correctly, although she was struggling with an injury.

I'm very surprised and sceptical about these claimed lifts. Maybe Edwards's "power clean" was more of a squat clean? A top athlete would have the flexibility/skill to perform weightlifting movements.

When I arrived home from work last night (approx 11.30pm) I saw a HUGE bat-like creature (wings certainly looked bat-like) which squawked VERY loudly - like a parrot! What could it have been? Anyone know of any very large nocturnal birds that squawk? A bat surely couldn't have been that size.

Thanks for clearing that up, JC! So we need to get through 2 comps to get to Britain's in 2009!

Good lifting JC. Do you wrap your knees?
