My son was nearly 8 when he deadlifted an axle weighing 55kg for 3 reps. He benched 20kg for 3 too.

He's 12 now and squats 45kg for around 6 reps. Quite a strong kid but lives away from me now so only trains every other weekend with me.

Great lifting
» having a training low. (Go to post)20-01-2017 @ 10:59
I've had to do 4 major resets in 5 years of training. Having to go back down to light weights each time taught me a lot about humility in the gym and learning that everyone is there for a reason.

So yeah, been through that "low" where things feel heavy. So go back to what worked to get you strong. Treat it as a means to learn new methods, new techniques and you'll be better for it and possibly help prevent reoccurence of injuries.

I've never had the same injury twice since 2013. New ones? Yep. But the general aches and pains come and go and you ride the waves of strength.

Hope you find whatever it was that got you started!
» 300kg deadlift for two singles (Go to post)20-01-2017 @ 10:26
Trying out a suit for the second time. Been 12 weeks of crappy rehab and physio on my torn trap. Was lifting with a real imbalance on one side.

I've done 260kg, 280kg and now 300kg so safe to say that my imbalance issues are fixed based on the bar path.

Anyway, here it is and I think 340kg is definitely achievable this year. 320kg in 8 - 12 weeks first!

I've started out doing 5 sets of 5 on my paused work, and the working weight is so light in terms of weight, that it shouldn't be an issue for me... However, it is really kicking my arse!

I'm doing 3x3 and just adding 5kg every week. I'll see how far that gets me.

Last night was 145kg deadlift (DOH no straps though). Trying to build a bit of grip strength over time as I am a strap whore.

I've actually just started both together this month, albeit paused front squats instead if back. No belts either, not even a soft rehband one. It has broken me!

I always wear a belt from 70% of 1RM upwards or for rep work. Burst two discs and never going through that again if I can use a tool to try and prevent it Unhappy

Paused front squats are a lot of fun... good crossover for stones for me!

I've worked hard on my paused squats (proper 3-4 second pause with exhalation at the bottom) and reached a decent standard. Legs are bigger than ever and I feel I have some crossover strength wise.

Does anyone find paused deadlifts have have a similar training effect? I've read a lot about them but whereas some say it helps build confidence at a sticking point other articles have suggested it teaches a slower pull (when the aim is to keep pulling fast).

Any thoughts?
» 180 push press (Go to post)30-11-2016 @ 09:30
Awesome strength to finish at the point where many would ditch it.

I always rack the bar on my chest for push pressing. I was coached by John Clark not long ago and he said my general, overall flexibility is more like an olympic lifter than a strongman.

I've just always done the drills. Whenever I go back to doing something other than that, I end up slightly injured. I've now stopped training with people who interfere with my warm up routines because at the end of the day, I'm not going to be the guy taking 6 weeks off every time.

Top lift Paul. It's my one big goal to push press that weight.

Just took my time with it to make sure I got it to my chest. Normally do a proper triple extension but my trap is fooked on one side. Safter than sorry.

slimsim said:I'm finding it hard to believe that the 140kg log was a PB! Looked like a doddle for you.

The press was easy in the end. My kids were cheering me on and a lot of friends in the crowd so spurred me on.

AdamT said:Mate that's your pb, but not your real max. Might of felt hard, but looked ridiculous.

If you could clean 160 with similar effort, you would press it.

Definitely wasn't hard but ran out of attempts. Would have gone for 150kg else.

Next training cycle should put me in 160kg territory.

Second place in comp out of 3 entering. So the game was to push Marcin Braun as hard as poss and set PBs on every event.

I did all of that apart from the deadlift which is still my weakest event. But I'll fix that.

140kg log PB, 142kg stone for 5 reps, 140kg farmers 20m, 290kg deadlift... all PBs. Did what I said I would. One rep off the stone, a few seconds off the farmers, 50 kg off the deadlift and 10kg off the log. Did my best which is all I can ever do.

Time to set up training now for the next phase.

Squat Press DL Bench Reps
Week 1 130 85 170 80 3x8
Week 2 130 85 170 80 4x8

» Comp Log PB 140kg (Go to post)21-11-2016 @ 15:01
Sorted my pressing out this year. Aim was to hit a PB in a comp.

Did it with 140kg on my final lift.

Also did a 142kg stone for 5 reps over a fairly high yoke (another PB):

» Going to the next level (Go to post)08-11-2016 @ 14:13
Ok, so competed in 3 novice comps... a couple of inters and 4 opens in the past 3 years. Progressively moved through. A win at England's Most Powerful Man (novices) in my first year and a few podium finishes in Opens comps.

What do you think it takes to get to the next level or what's your experience of doing so if you compete?

I'm talking of competing in qualifiers but actually being competitive in a huge field of really good guys too.

I can't devote my time 100% to it like a few guys seem to be doing these days but I do what I can and mainly do this to enjoy myself, keep depression at bay and lat flare my steroid moles to the underlings in the gym.
