» John's training journal - starting out in strongman (Go to post)05-09-2012 @ 17:33
As part of my training for the next Southampton's Strongest Man competition around Christmas I want to aim for the following:

Squat currently 187.5kg, target 205kg
Deadlift currently 230kg, target 260kg
Pushpress currently 92.5kg, target 105kg

I will also aim to close the CoC number 2.5.

Any advice/opinions always welcome.

joewills said:Hey man, well done on the swindon's, i was there too, was a tough field that day and good pb on deads.

If it were me mate looking at your training i would jack in the benching, don't know how others feel on here but in strongman its overhead that matters. i would concentrate on getting a big pushpress for reps rather than following a bb style bench workouts and save close just close grip for at the end of a deadlifting/squat sesh.

Hope all your training works out mate and that you don't mind the opinion.

Thanks for the post mate.

If I dropped bench press (just keeping CGBP) then should I be training shoulders twice a week? I guess loglift when I get the chance would work as another shoulder workout. It seems strange dropping bench but I guess it makes sense and tbh I don't really like doing it anyway.

Are there any other shoulder exercises I should be doing another than strict press, push press, smith press?

Cheers mate. I'm hoping to get some feedback on here soon as currently do a lot of training by myself and need some pointers, especially on my upper body work.

Heard there may be another Novice Strongman competition in Southampton near Christmas so this is my immediate focus.

28th August 2012
Trained by myself tonight.

Back Squats (all to below horizontal)
12 x 20kg
10 x 60kg
8 x 100kg
Belt on
3 x 140kg
1 x 185kg PB
8 x 140kg
These felt really strong today although saw some stars on the 185kg

Leg press on the cable machine
10 x 100kg
8 x 150kg
6 x 200kg
1 x 250kg fail (normally do this so assume tired from squatting)

Calf raises on cable machine
24 x 100kg
20 x 150kg
16 x 200kg
12 x 250kg
Last set was really hard, should've left it at 220kg

Front Squats
10 x 20kg
8 x 60kg
Belt on
4 x 100kg
1 x 130kg PB
Felt easy again.

Really good session except the leg presses. Might try some racked squats next time to mix things up. Will also try and video squats on Sunday.

27th August 2012

Trained with Jay today.

A few curls to warm my biceps up as they're still tender.

Racked bench press, all with 3 second pause
12 x 40kg
12 x 60kg
10 x 70kg
8 x 80kg
6 x 90kg
3 x 100kg (all assisted)

Never tried these before. Felt good although works the arms more than the chest I think.

CGBP
12 x 40kg
10 x 60kg
8 x 70kg
4 x 80kg (last one assisted) PB
12 x 60kg

Bench press
12 x 40kg
10 x 60kg
6 x 70kg
5 x 80kg (last one assisted)
2 x 90kg (all assisted)

These felt weak but was getting tired. Need to work out how I can peak on several bench pressing exercise in one session.

Board bench press
10 x 60kg
6 x 70kg
3 x 80kg (last one assisted)

These were also new.

Perhaps need more rest between sets. Generally a good session but not sure I worked the chest that much.
» John's training journal - starting out in strongman (Go to post)26-08-2012 @ 08:34
Tried atlas stones and log lift today:

Log Lift
42kg x 10 from floor
42kg x 10 strict press
42kg x 10 from floor
42kg x 10 strict press

These felt easy. My normal weights won't fit on this log so until I get some new weights I'll only be able to do 42kg. Shame as I should be trying nearer 100kg.

Atlas Stones
80kg stone x 3

My elbows are causing me serious pain at the moment and doing atlas stones didn't help.

Won't be doing these for 2 weeks I think. Hopefully be able to pick up some more weights for the log by then.
