Overall world record is 1:10.5.

This 1:12.7 is equal to the (new, also done as a WC qualification piece) 40-49 world record.

https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/racing/records/world?machine...

1:12.7 to 1:10.5 is a massive jump, that much is certain.

4) handing the keys of the castle, so to speak, to black-box expertise

In which country has this happened?

checks and balances should be put in place to manage now that plays out, at a constitutional level.

In which country are there no constitutional checks and balances, or, what additional checks and balances do you have in mind?

Around the world, governments with access to identical sets of data but operating in slightly different political systems and basing their decisions on different groups of national or international experts, have taken a wide range of measures -some identical and others not at all, some in agreement with expert recommendations and others not at all- and have faced varying degrees of political and popular protest in the process. Covid measures have been challenged in court and some times struck down in the US, in France, in Spain, in Belgium... Local and national elections were held in many countries throughout 2021.
I'm not going to claim that the system is perfect, but I simply don't understand where this idea that anonymous experts have taken absolute control of our lives is coming from.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding here but is the short version of your feelings on this something to the effect that:
If enough "experts" tell you something is true you will trust them even if everything you personally know suggests otherwise?
For example if you're handed a "flying suit" and they assure you it'll fly would you jump from a plane trusting the suit even though to you it is clearly just a regular suit and you don't believe it will allow you to fly?
(An absurd example i know but it gets the point across).

"Everything you actually know" is more often than not jack s**t, a few personal anecdotes mixed up with ignorance, minsinterpretation of facts and more importantly a lack of awareness of how much you don't know. And I'm speaking for myself here.

I'm struggling to think of a situation where "everything I actually know" would hold weight against scientific consensus, so if you have a better example than the flying suit, don't hesitate to share.

And by the way, I don't think Rick is saying to listen to anyone that labels themselves an "expert", quite the contrary.

It doesn't really matter what his disagreements are. Rick will just say "you're wrong" in a condescending manor and that's the end of convo

That's not really my point. Let's assume that Rick concedes that Nimble is qualified to give his opinion on that study and on Covid policy in general. My question remains: now what?

I’m honestly amazed that someone as clearly intelligent and well-intentioned as you can hold this position.
Our disagreement is so profound I’d have to write an essay in response… would such an endeavour be worthwhile? Or would it achieve nothing but making me feel upset? What do you think? Thank God I’m not in politics.

I for one would be interested in knowing what exactly you disagree with. I have a lot of questions that I've typed up and erased, and they boil down to this: you (we, others) have an opinion; now what?

French indoor rowing champs (online) recap.

Saturday:
2k, 6:28.6, 10th M40-49. I didn't do a lot of 2k-specific prep so I wasn't 100% sure how it would go. Happy to get sub-6:30, but I had to work for it.

Sunday:
- 500m individual race, 1:21.2, 3rd M40-49. Good effort, happy with my time. The two top spots were out of reach (1:20.1 and 1:19.7) but I still would have liked sub-1:21.

- 500m team race (men), 1:20.7 team average, 1st place. The way this works is that 4 people row at the same time and their average pace moves the boat forward. So the faster you row, the "longer" you have to row compared to your teammates. For example in our case, one guy pulled 1:16.3 average, but since our race lasted 1:20.7, he actually rowed 529m over the duration, while I rowed 499m (1:21.6 pace). Anyway, this was pretty brutal, but we successfully defended our title (by 0.2s!)

- 500m team race (mixed), 1:28.9 team average, 8th. I was just filling in on the B or C team, but I still gave it my all and it was brutal. Grin Here I rowed 528m at a 1:24.2 pace, with some serious dying after a bit of flying.

Overall quite happy with this weekend of racing. Only thing that could have made it better would have been to be at an actual venue and not in my garage. Roll-Eyes

Eek

I *think* that should be enough to earn you a spot Tongue

I didn't bother entering an effort for either distance. I don't mind finishing way out of the lead in a "live" erg race, I've done it in the past. But in a virtual race from my garage? Meh. I'll be doing the French virtual champs, however, out of habit and because it's more my level.

macroth said:Went for a nice run and some roller-skiing over the weekend.

Cooper test (12' max distance) on Monday, managed 3k which is ok but not great.

Lifting/conditioning on Tuesday, more fast-ish running on Wednesday (5.5k in 24').

Rest day today.

I've never heard of the Cooper test before but based on what I was reading for men aged 20-29 &rt;2,800m is "excellent" so I think you are doing yourself a misjustice.

Thank you, sir. It's all relative, of course. General population "excellent" might be "middle of the pack" depending on who you train/compete with. But there's something to be said for keeping a positive outlook.

Ugly squat(s) = right psoas acting up again = debilitating lower back pain = no rowing sprints or much else, really, since Tuesday. Unhappy
» A journal of non-negligible strength gains (Go to post)11-01-2022 @ 09:17
Monday:

Superset, alternating every minute:
SHOULDER PRESS
6x4x47.5
WEIGHTED PULLUP
6x4x16kg
PALLOF PRESS
6x7/side

Then some "Tabata (8x20"on/10" off) KB snatches, rowing, burpees and skierging. Gave it my best on the rower; it hurt, and my best wasn't very good.

This morning:
Calf raises
Squat singles 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160. 160 was ugly.

Rowing sprints later
» A journal of non-negligible strength gains (Go to post)10-01-2022 @ 08:09
Wednesday rowing sprints: improving, but still a long way to go
Thursday squats: 110x3, 130x3, 140x1, 150x1, 155x1
Friday deadlifts: 3x3x170, nice and snappy. Also Arnold presses @13kg, Pendlay rows @90, flyes/rear delts @11.
Sunday race in the muddy snow/snowy mud : pretty epic for a mere 4k run. No calf issues, hallelujah. Kids got 3rd and 5th in their categories.

f**king nobody can Grin , those are bloody hard.

Easiest way is to control the eccentric as much as possible and do a push-up at the bottom, off the floor or off a bench depending on your setup and on where you start losing tension. Or you can literally do partials, only go as low as you can control. Doesn't matter if the ROM is silly at first.
