Post Edited: 12.06.2015 @ 11:25 AM by Ben_F UK Masters 2015I usually only get nervous on the day of the comp’ but the nerves kicked in the day before on this occasion… perhaps feeling the pressure of having qualified the previous two years and still not 100% sure my training for the overhead medley was going to pay off (as I was training shoulders 2-3 times a week they always felt fatigued when pressing… I was hoping the super-compensation from 6 days off would kick in just in time). Due to the missus coming in from a night out and then my step-daughter doing the same a few hours earlier combined with nerves I only managed a 1-2 hours sleep. Plenty of caffeine and some old school Tech Trance and Chilli Peppers got me in the mood on the 90 minute drive down to Chester. I liked the venue Core Fitness, it is a modern warehouse gym, small but well equipped and the staff seemed very positive and happy to have us there. The events took place outside in the large car park and we were well looked after by Rick and the VXG crew. Event 1. Max Axle Deadlift This was about 16” I would guess… higher than I had been training it which is better than the other way around! Rising bar, had to take all lifts, plenty of warm-up time so all good. 230kg – took it slow to see how my back felt, which was okay but could feel the tightness of the old injury still 280kg – no problem, still a bit slow 300kg – better pull 320kg – heavy but no problem 340kg – again, felt heavy but never in doubt, only myself, big Paul Carter and Mark McLoughlin were successful 360kg – no chance! Moved an inch maybe. Mark got it and Paul didn’t, so =2nd and happy enough. Event 2. Overhead Medley 64kg Circus Dumbbell / 116kg log / 130kg Axle / 78kg Circus Dumbbell A lot of people no-repped on the first dumbbell but then people started to get it and move through the other implements but only Dale Peters had completed it, there was some consternation about this as Dale was not pulling his supporting hand clear before the press on the ‘bells... but the refs gave it (presumably seeing at as supporting and not pressing the bells?). By the time it came to me my strategy was – no mistakes on the first three items, move quickly between them all then take a few breathes before attacking the big bell… it went exactly to plan (bar a slight wobble on the axle and accidently strict pressing the log!) and I completed it in the quickest time… 45.7 secs, 1st place, very happy. Event 3. Frame carry. 220kg x 20-25m, head to head. We paired up according to overall leader board and I was against Mark McLoughlin… I got a good start but could feel him closing on me which drove me on to push as hard as I could and stay ahead, which I did. 9.2 secs, 1st place. Last year’s champ Mark Lawson pulled out after this event with a hamstring/lower problem. Event 4. Truck Pull. Controversy strikes! On Paul Carter’s run the harness broke… he went flying and landed badly on his already injured shoulder. A second harness was produced but on my run this broke as well and I hit the deck but was okay… after some repairs I went for it again but it broke again and I flew forward but kept my feet this time. Further repairs were made but I was attached differently to everyone else and couldn’t move the truck… I am not a bad truck puller (have done a double truck pull at Barnard’s Caste and placed 2nd etc) so new something was not right. By this time I had been in the sun for about 20-30 minutes and exerted myself 3 times already, albeit for short bursts… I was given the option on whether to try again but declined… Paul also declined and then withdrew from the comp’ due to his shoulder injury which was a real shame. Eventually a vote was made by the athletes as to whether all the points be scrapped or me and Paul be given an average of our points in the previous 3 events and everyone keep their points for the event… the latter was voted for by 10 votes to 5. So, no actual placing for me but decent points on the board, some grumbling from a few that it did not suit but with all due respect to everyone else I was going to make sure it did not make too much difference by doing well in the next two events anyway. Event 5. Side Axe Hold. Two 8kg axes held to the side low on the handles, head to head, backs against posts. About half way through my hold I asked what the lead time was as I had not checked beforehand… it was 1:22 and at that time I felt good for it… about 1:10 the shakes kicked in which was followed by much shouting and a desperate hold to get to 1:24… Dale Peters next me went past this relative ease to win the event, 2nd place for me. Event 6. Atlas Stones 115kg / 125kg / 135kg / 145kg / 175kg I wasn’t keeping an eye on the scores, I had just been going all out on every event and was determined to do so again on the final event even though I suspected I could cruise through a few stones and still win overall… I also felt this was fairer to those behind me as it was close from 2nd through to 6th. The first four went up well but I missed the 5th from the lap… I re-tacked and failed again… after some great encouragement from everyone around me I went for it once more and nailed it this time. 4 finished all of them of which I was slowest with 57 secs. Was happy to finish the stone run though and finish the comp’ on a high albeit at the price of a very sore hamstring. Overall 1st , not sure of final points yet but think I would have won by a decent margin… hopefully a good enough margin that rendered the truck pull problem irrelevant so nobody feels hard done by. Worlds at the end of August I would think… will probably pull out of the heavy July comp’ as it will take me a couple of weeks to heal up from this one as right hamstring and right shoulder are very sore and my back has its usual post-comp soreness and tightness and want to get a good training run and only have to peak once more this year. | |||
