Buy some of those hand warmers you get from outdoors shops.

Put your pot of tacky in some kind of container (e.g. tupperware box) and chuck them in with it a good hour or more before the event.

I did this at the U105 Northern qualifiers and my tacky was liquid, so depending on your tacky you may want to experiment before hand, or at least keep an eye on it.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but is this an open event or are there any qualification criteria?

Tuesday 8th Sept 09 - training in the rain

Couldn't resist training at Northwich, even though the weather was far from clement...

Farmers' walk
70kg per hand*15m
70kg*15m
100kg*15m
100kg*15m

Axle deadlift (no platform, just below knee)
220kg*3
220kg*3 - straps broke
220kg*1
260kg*1
220kg*5
Pretty easy but grip was an issue in the rain, especially when the straps went.

Axle squat
40kg*5
80kg*5
120kg*5
140kg*5

Stones - abandoned

Modest weights but kept up a good tempo - all done in about 40 minutes. Very enjoyable indeed. Can't wait to get doing events again.

Clean and press
60kg*5 - strict press
60kg*5
60kg*5 - 1 movement
80kg*3 - 1 clean and push press from now on

90kg*5

Narrow grip bench
60kg*5
60kg*8
80kg*5
90kg*5
60kg*7 - drop set

Face pulls
2* lots

Push press finally feels right. Increased volume warm-ups are helping. Time to start looking at my workload, rest, etc.

Solid looking training Josh with some admirable attention to detail with your diet. Wish I could be that organised!

Looking at your targets, I would say (from my limited experience):

For strongman, deadlift and overhead are the most important gym movements in my opinion. Front squats are also liked by many (myself included), especially once you're training events.

Looking at the UK strongman north novice just remember that the 220kg squat in the final is a hell of a lot for a 'novice' comp. Squat events seem to be 'fashionable' this year. More often, strongmen need to focus on their deadlift.

Keep it up mate.

Weds 26th August 09

5 min. bike to warm up

Seated barbell press
60kg*4*5

Bench

Circuit of machine dips, rear delt machine, lateral raise machine - 3 circuits with ascending weights.

God, do I feel weak. My pressing is usually bad, but this is appalling. I sincerely hope it comes back soon.
