Looking good there.

Out of interest, you seem to pull a lot of singles in the deadlift. Is this your usual strategy when building up for a 1rm? If so, how do your you structure your build up?

Tuesday 8th

P/cleans from hang* some

Front squat
60kg 2*5
110kg 3*3

RDL
70kg*5
120kg*5
160kg*5
160kg*5

Sat 12th December
Tentative start to build up for Adlington Push/Pull. Still not 100%. Had work Christmas party last night, which hasn't helped.

Row/press/squat complex to warm up

Clean and jerk - (trying) squat cleans
60kg 4*1
70kg*1
80kg*1
90kg 2*1
95kg 4*1
Trying to drill/learn the technique. Better that I expected, but don't want to get too optimistic. Technique always goes as soon as I get any real weight on the bar.

P/jerk from rack
100kg 5*1
Problems racking.

P/press
60kg*5
80kg 3*5

Squat (high bar)
100kg 3*5
Legs feel dead.

All very low key, but a start nonetheless. Good news is that all this time off training seems to have finally sorted my shoulder.

As an addendum to the above post the general feeling of being 'run down' has since erupted into being properly ill. As a result of this, I'm sat here at home instead of doing the NW. t**t.

Tuesday 1st December

Various shoiudler exercises/1 arm db press
Some light cleans/squats/complexes

Just needed to get out of the house and get the blood flowing. Sleep deprived from exam marking and generally feeling run down. Feeling too many niggles for my liking.

Saturday 28th November

Clean/push press
60kg*5
70kg*5
80kg*3
90kg*3
100kg*2,2,1,1
110kg*1 clean only
120kg*3 clean pulls
Cleans felt strong. Really worked on gettting back arch and a distinct second pull. Presses not on song. Kept getting exertion headaches so didn't really push them.

Bench
60kg*1,1,1
80kg*1
90kg*1
100kg*1
Going for a token bench next week. Just having a feel. Will probably go 100 and leave it there. Worked on a few technical things which seemed to help keep pressure off shoulder.

Pullups
Machine 2*10
Bodyweight 20 reps total

DB row
37.5kg*10
50kg*5
50kg*10

Have picked some really conservative openers for next week. Looking forwards to it. Just wish I had been a bit more structured with my build-up. A couple of v.light sessions next week, then after the comp will begin getting ready for the Adlington meet.

Monday

Shoulder rehab exercises
1 arm DB press - several sets

Tuesday

Squat
60kg 3*5
100kg*3
140kg*1
180kg*1
200kg*1
220kg 2*1

Deadlift
120kg*3
170kg*1
210kg*1
250kg*f,f,1
Arse.

Not a good session. Borne out of anxiety really. Decided to do the GBPF comp next week, so somehow persuaded myself that working up to my openers would be a good idea. Retarded. Rushed through, didn't get warm enough etc.

First 2 times I walked up to the 250 deadlift I just completely lost it. Didn't even start pulling.

Third effort took real psyching up and was phenomenally slow. At least it was a good clean lift.

Lessons learnt:
1. Warm up properly
2. Find out how to use wraps correctly
3. More sets to warm up for the deadlift

Saturday 21st November

Medley
Light set with each event to warm up
90kg farmers' 20m, small rock load, chain drag 20m - 1 set
90kg farmers' 20m, small and medium rock load, chain drag 20m - 2 sets
Left me blowing and feeling decidedly queasy.

Light tyre
1*5
1*7

Felt a bit perfunctory but god I'm unfit!

Thursday 19th November

Push press
20kg 2*10
60kg*5
60kg*5
80kg*3
90kg*3
100kg*1
110kg*1
90kg 3*3

Pulldowns/seated rows
2*10 of each in a circuit*3

Dips
Bodyweight*few
several sets on machine, ascending weight

Binning the flat bench for the foreseeable. I hate it, it's making my shoulder hurt and I don't even think I'm getting anything out of it anymore.

Thanks mate. New plan is in weeks;
1. 170 - 6x6
2. 180 - 5x5
3. 190 - 4x4
4. 200 - 3x3
5. 230 new max RAW (no wraps) squat
6. Wraps on and 250-260
Grin

Do you generally get that much out of wraps(20-30kg)?

I only ask as I've just bought some and am interested to know.

Tuesday 17th Novemebr 2009

Arrived feeling reasonable but could have eaten better today. Been a bit famine and feast. Therefore was very conscious of the burger, chips and chicken nuggets threatening...

Squat
60kg*5
60kg*5
100kg*5
140kg*3
180kg*1
180kg*1 - belt and wraps on
200kg*1
220kg*1
230kg*1
240kg*1 - best squat in 2.5 years.
First time I've used wraps and it felt weird.

Deadlift
120kg*5
170kg*3
190kg*3
220kg*3 - belt on for these

Left it there. Next week I'll rest the squats, thank god.

Sunday 15th November

Exam conference meant I couldn't train events on Sat. Quick one at the gym instead.

Bike/row to warm up folowed by light rehab exercises for shoudlers.

Powerclean (from hang)
60kg 5 sets of 3

Standing 1 arm DB press
10kg 2*10 (each arm, 1 set palms in, one palms out)
17.5kg 2*10 (as above)
20kg 2*5 (ibid)

Hammer curls 1*10

Hammer curl and press (kind of like a 'viper' press with dumbells)
10kg*10
20kg*7

Also did a lot of tidying up between sets due to the high volume of inconsiderate fools who train there.

Agreed with you on how rampant use of substances appears to be in some gyms amongst the young and/or inexperienced. The product of a culture of instant gratification? Who knows.

You seem to like your declines. I'm interested to know why, as I desperately hate flat bench and am looking for any excuse to do an alternative.

Looks like some good volume on the squats. How's the bodyweight at the moment? Is the mission to get to 120kg still on?

Thursday 12th November

Shoulder exercises and light presses to warm up.

Push press (first rep from floor)
60kg*3
60kg*3
60kg*3
80kg*3
90kg*3
100kg*2
Very creaky knees and ankles, took an age to warm up, but shoulder ok.

Bench
60kg 2*3
80kg*1
90kg*1
100kg*1
All paused. Nothing hurt, so that's good.

DB row
25kg*10
40kg*10
50kg*10

Pullups
Bodyweight*3,4,5,5

Dips (smallest ROM ever)
Bodyweight 2*5

Tuesday 10th November

Squat
60kg 3*5 - long time to get warm
100kg*5
140kg*3
180kg*3
200kg*2
210kg*2
210kg*2
210kg*2
Trying really hard to get into some sort of groove, but a few goodmorning squats in there still.

Deadlift
120kg*5
170kg*3
190kg*3
220kg*1 - belt on
240kg*1
200kg*5
Went a bit off plan. My body rewarded me by saying it didn't want to do deadlifts.
